James I. McKaughan settled in Elm Township, Allen County, in 1881. He settled upon a piece of prairie land and began its cultivation and development with a team and a small bunch of cattle. His success is observable in the ownership of a half section of land (instead of a quarter as alone, has brought about this gratifying condition). The element of management, of course, is a valuable aid to industry in the accumulation of wealth, and both these characteristics present in composition of "Jim McCoin".

Mr. McKaughan was born in Lewis County, Illinois. August 14, 1863. He is the son of the late Edward McKaughan who died at the home of our subject August 24, 1889. The later was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky in 1819. He was married there to Elizabeth Norfleet, who died in Johnson County, in 1880, at the age of sixty. Their children are: John McKaughan of Johnson County, Harvey McKaughan, of the same County, Elizabeth, wife of Abe Larrick; Eliza, wife of Levi Williams, of Butler County, Kansas; Serena (Cyrenia), deceased, wife of Spencer Sloan; Rhoda, wife of Ed Montgomery. of Coffeyville, Kansas; Lizzie (Melissa), who married J.B. Williams of Allen County and James, our subject.

James McKaughan was schooled in the country. He was brought up in Johnson County, Kansas, and received his first lessons in farming there. He was married in Allen County in 1884, to ROSA MILLS, daughter of C.K. Mills, one of the well known farmers of Deer Creek Township. The children of this marriage are: Jay and Edith McKaughan.

James McKaughan has filled an important niche in the citizenship of Allen County. He has not only done his share in local development and improvement but in other ways has he shown his interest and pride in his county and patriotism. He was trained with the Democratic party because he believed its policies to be best adapted to needs of our country, but a conviction to the contrary would cause him to hold personal interest above party and to cast his ballet accordingly.

3-3 HUGH McKAUGHAN (2), named after his uncle Hugh McKaughan (1): born in Pennsylvania, went with his parents to what is now Sullivan County, Tennessee after the Revolutionary War. He went to Pulaski County, Kentucky around 1800 with his parents where he was granted 200 acres of land on the east side of the south fork of the Cumberland River. He apparently kept his land; but he went to North Carolina where he married PHOEBE POPE, 29 March 1804. His marriage bond was co-signed by his father-in-law, Rev. George W. Pope; Witnesses James Pope, the bride's brother,and Joab Brooks (2), brother of his sister Rebecca's husband, John D. Brooks. It is possible Hugh and Phoebe knew each other in Pennslyvania before they moved south.

Phoebe Pope McKaughan, born 7 August 1783 in Pennsylvania, daughter of Rev. George Whitefield Pope and Mary Haitt. Rev. George W. Pope, son of James Pope, was born in England. He was raised in the Church of England, in fact, he was named after the famed priest, George Whitefield, but he changed his faith to Baptist after he got to America where he was a minister for over fifty years. Forty-five of the years at Abbotts Creek, North Carolina. There is quite a bit written about Rev. George W. Pope in the North Carolina Baptist Archives. He owned a lot of land near High Point, North Carolina, where many of his descendants still live. I read that after he retired, he kept getting the visions to "go to Lynches Creek and preach". He was a man in his eighties and he wasn't interested in preaching anymore, and he didn't know where Lynches Creek was so he didn't pay any attention to the visions. His crops and cattle started dying so he got on his knees and prayed, "God, what do you want me to do?". An angel appeared and told him to go to Lynches Creek and preach; so he saddled up his best pony and headed for parts unknown. Landmarks in his dreams he had the night before showed him he was on the right road. After traveling several days, he came into a town that was having a revival so he decided to stop and attend. After everyone had spoken, he asked if he could say a few words. He spoke with such vigor that after the meeting, a group of men came to him and asked if he would go to their town and preach. He asked them where they lived and they said, "down the road about five miles in a settlement called Lynches Creek". He was by that time in South Carolina. He was there until he died five years later. This story is on his monument in the church cemetery the congregation erected in his honor.

Hugh McKaughan (2) left his family in North Carolina when the twins were a few months old (1815) to seek greener pastures.I read a letter telling that Hugh (2) went to the Dominion of Mexico (Texas) to try to get land near kin (his niece, Jane Mercer Brooks Simpson). When we were in Pulaski County, Kentucky doing research, we found him having his land surveyed and getting a license to run a saw mill. In 1818. H took out a marriage license to POLLY RIDDLE in 1818 but apparently this marriage was nt finaloized. We recently found a letter he had written in Texas to his son, Rev. William, in Kansas giving his love to his wife, Phebe and children and his plans were to go to North Carolina when he could sell his land. This too apparently did now materialize because we found the last record of him in Texas in 1845.

After Hugh McKaughan (2) left North Carolina, Phoebe took her children to her father's farm where they built a cabin for her down by the spring. The foundation is still visable. They always referred to it as "Widow Phoebe's home" All their children stayed in North Carolina but Rev. William, my great-grandfather. Their children:

It was this generation, around 1870, when men were changing their bundlesome, immigrant names to the American version. They changed it to how it was pronounced in the locality where they settled. Apparently the Gaelic pronounciation of McKaughan sounded like McCoin for that is the most popular way to spell the name now.

At the age of eighty, still hale and vigorous, Isaac Harrison McKaughan lives in the village of Kernersville, in Forsyth County. He grew up and had his first business experience before the war. During the war he served faithfully and loyally as a Confederate Soldier. After the final surrender he returned home to take up the threads of civil existence. Mr. McKaughan was a very prosperous farmer for many years, and still owns a very large and handsome estate.

He was born in Guilford County, North Carolina August 26, 1837. His grandfather McKaughan, of Scotch ancestry, reared his family in Guilford County. In the early years of the last century, he was determined to seek a home in the new country then opening to American settlers in that part of the Dominion of Mexico known as Texas. It was such an adventure as many pioneers were willing to engage in at a risk of considerable personal danger. His son, Archibald, received from him a letter written at Natchitoches, Louisana, the border of Texas, and soon afterwards there came a notice to the effect that Hugh McKaughan was dead. Hugh married Phoebe Pope who survived her husband many years and died at the home of her son, Forrester, in Guilford County. Her six children were named: George, Archibald, William, Forrester, Jesse and Jane.

Archibald McKaughan, father of Isaac H., was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, 15 December 1808. He grew up in country surroundings and lived in Guilford County until 1839, when he moved to Stokes County. Settling near Freidland, now Forsyth County, he became a general farmer, and he remained in that county an honored and useful citizen, until his death in 1879. He married Mary Welch. She was born in Guilford County February 3, 1810. Her father, Isaac Welch, was a native of the same county, and her grandfather, William Welch, was also a farmer who spent his last years in Guilford County. The Welch settlement is about three or four miles from High Point. Isaac Welch, married Martha Paine, who was probably a life long resident of Guilford County. Mrs Archibald McKaughan died January 26, 1877. Her six children were: William, Isaac H., Richard, Charlotte, Phoebe Jane and John. The sons, William, Isaac and Richard were Confederate Soldiers.

Isaac Harrison McKaughan grew up in Stokes County on his father's farm. When he was 19 years of age, he started for South Carolina for the purpose of selling tobacco. He hired a team from his Uncle and bought a stock of tobacco from N.D. Sullivan. As a tobacco peddler he did considerable business, and was in South Carolina until 1862. In the spring of that year he enrolled in the Clemons Company and was attached to the Seventh Confederate Regiment under Colonel Clayburn. He was subsequently transferred to the Sixteenth North Carolina Battalion. This service took him all over the great battlefields of Virginia, and while constantly on duty and ever ready for the hazards and fortune of a soldier's life, he suffered neither sickness or wounds or capture and was with his command until the surrender at Appomattex. He and sixteen of his commrades were able to retain their horses, and they rode home and were paroled at Greenboro.

Bravely facing the conditions of life in a devastated country, he at once rented a tract of land in Abbott's Creek Township and spent the spring and summer farming. The rest of the year he was again a tobacco salesman in South Carolina. In 1869 Mr. McKaughan bought a tract of land in Abbott's Creek Township and was

Steadily engaged in farming there until 1876. In that year he sold his farm and moved to Kernersville. He is first purchase of land there was fifty acres close to the town, and in 1884 he bought a lot in the village and erected a commodious brick house, where he has since lived. Much of Mr McKaughan's prosperity in business was acquireds a tobacco salesman, and for upwards to forty years he made his annual trips to South Carolina. He continued to invest in land until he had upwards to 350 acres and has financial independence that enables him to live and take life leisurely.

Mr McKaughan was married in 1864 to Esther Robertson. She was born five miles south of Kernersville October 6, 1939, daughter of William Haley and Mahala Robertson. They were happily married for thirty-four years until her death on May 20, 1898. In 1899, Mr. McKaughan married MARY NEWTON PEGAM, a native of Guilford County and a daughter of John F. and Nancy Jones Pegam. Mr. McKaughan is an active member of Kernersville Methodist Episcopal Church, south, and both his wives had also been members of that society. He is affiliated with Norfleet Camp of the Confederate Veterans.

By his first marriage, he had six children: Miranda, Mary, David, Cornelius M., Arminius Harrison, and Charles. Miranda is the wife of Robert E. Steele of Greenboro, Mary married Charles Hester and their son Homer is a dentist. David married Minnie Hooker; their seven children are Bessie, Roy Hooker, Gates, Olivia, David and Esther. Cornelius by his second marriage to Leata Reed has a son, Robert Steele. Arminius married Betty Gentry and they have seven children: Elah, Duke, Ralph, Donald, John, Phyllis and Maxine. Charles married Nona Brown, and their three children are William, Charles and Mary.
