5-6 FRANCIS NEWTON McKAUGHAN: (twin to Columbus W.) born 31 July 1848, North Carolina. He went to Georgia and then to Kansas with his parents. Married by his father, Rev. William McCoin, to a neighbor girl, EMELINE RAMSEY 26 December 1869, Greenwood County, Kansas under the name of McCaughan. She, the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Cooper (Thomas) Ramsey, bor 22 October 1852, Hamilton County, Indiana. They were my grandparents.

Francis N. and Emeline lived in Greenwood, Cloud and Elk counties in Kansas before going to Oklahoma in 1893, as the state was opening up. Francis N. had homesteaded in Kansas so he was not qualified to homestead in Oklahoma, but their eldest son, Elvin W., did run in the Cimmarron Strip. Francis first rented a farm near Perkins, Oklahoma but later bought school land at "Toads Holler", now called Pleasant Valley, near Cleveland, Oklahoma. He was a farmer and freighter. He was not ordained but he knew the Bible and was a good speaker so was asked quite often to "deliver the message" in some school house or gathering in the early days of Oklahoma before churches were built and ministers hired. They joined the Christian Church (deciples of Christ) in Hallett, Oklahoma. Grandmothers name is on the corner stone as a charter member. Since he had been raised a Methodist, I feel possibly the Christian Church was the first Protestant church built in their area so they joined that. Many of their descendants still belong to this faith. Francis Newton was the only son of Rev. William to keep the spelling of McKaughan, as has all his descendants.

Francis Newton McKaughan died at the age of 59 years of kidney failure: 16 December 1907. After his passing, Emeline made her home with her daughter, Miss Cora McKaughan. Emeline died 20 January 1941, Canon City, Colorado. They are both buried in the Jennings Oklahoma Cemetery. Their children:

6-1 ELVIN WESLEY McKAUGHAN: born 6 November 1870, Greenwood County, Kansas. He came to Oklahoma with his parents where he ran in the Cimmarron Strip in 1893. He had picked out the bottom land he wanted and staked it and was told he had a certain amount of time to file in Perry, Oklahoma, so he went home and helped his father harvest the grain before he went before signing. When he got to Perry, he found someone else had signed for his land and he was given very poor farming land near Quay, Oklahoma but he stuck it out for several years before he sold and moved to Idaho. Later, oil was struck in the Quay area and their neighbors who did stay, are now some of the wealthiest families in Oklahoma. Elvin married MINNIE BELLE SKEELS 1 March 1896. She, the daughter of Sylvester Skeels and Cynthia Hewitt from Indiana to Kansas. She was born 6 January 1878, Elk County, Kansas.Elvin and Minnie moved to Idaho where the land was good and crops were plentiful but it was so cold and so wild they were afraid for the children to play outside there were so many mountain lions and wild cats, so they moved back to Oklahoma. In 1921, they moved to the homeplace of nearly 50 years that Elvin had built at 520 East 10th, Stillwater, Oklahoma. It was a larger town with a college (now Oklahoma State) and he felt the older children could further their education if they desired. Elvin was a carpenter and what I call a gentleman farmer. He had a half block of land so had several gardens, an orchard, vineyard, chickens and a cow.

Elvin's day started at 4 in the morning and ended when the sun went down. He did his work in the gardens before he went to work as a carpenter. He would buy a lot, build a house and then sell it. Years later, a friend's daughter asked me about the depression since I had lived through it. I stopped with a start: So I had, but I hadn't realized it before. We always had enough to eat. We didn't have much money but neither did anyone else so I thought nothing about it. This was long before television so we were not as informed about the World as we are today. I wore flour sack material dresses but they were pretty and so did everyone else, so here again, I thought nothing about it. When Elvin was 60 years old, he became afraid to climb ladders so a friend of his wanted to sell his shoe repair shop so Elvin bought it and ran the Star Shoe Repair until he was 80 years old. When Elvin grew older, his favorite pastime was sitting in the porch swing each Sunday afternoon with his friend and quote Bible verses. We didn't know he knew the Bible so well so asked him where he learned all the verses. He told us that on rainy or bad days when they could not go outside, his father would sit the children in a circle on the floor and they would quote Bible verses until no one knew another verse. The one who quoted the last verse was the winner. He died 13 August 1952 in Stillwater. Minnie died 25 May 1964, Stillwater. Both buried in the family plot at Fairlawn Cemetery, Stillwater. 7-1 WESLEY VERNON McKAUGHAN: born 12 February 1897, Quay, Oklahoma. He loved to tinker with engines so he was sent to Kansas City to an automobile engine repair school. About this time, World War I broke out so he went to the Navy. His Dad bought a garage thinking Wes would go into business with him when he got home. When Wes got back after his hitch, he wasn't too happy to settle down in the little prairie oil boom town of Quay, Oklahoma so he and his cousin, Francis Newton McKaughan (2) set out for greener pastures. They eventually got to Colorado, The boys loved to hunt and fish so asked around if anyone knew a rancher who didn't mind if they hunted and fished on his land. They were told to go see rancher Holestine. Little did Mr. Holestine know that those two gangly boys from Oklahoma would one day be his two son-in-laws. Wes. married MARJORIE IVON HOLESTINE 16 April 1924. They settled in Rye, Colorado, a small yown near Pueblo, Colorado that is half way up a mountain, where Wes. owned a trucking agency until he died 14 July 1967.

Wes loved his home in the Mountains. He had a motorcycle he would take off on to hunt and fish. He also managed to get to Canada about once a year to hunt elk and moose. He was a large, jolly guy who loved to pull a prank. They were active with the town Rodeo Association and the square dance club. Ivon was born 21 March 1906, Neodesha, Kansas. She died 12 March 1992 in Rye. Their child:

8-1 MARJORIE PAULINE McKAUGHAN: born 17 March 1926, Pueblo, Colorado. Died 4 May 1995, Fowler, CO. Married EVERETT E. HOGAN 24 February 1945, Raton, New Mexico. He retired as the Regional Horticulturist of southeast Colorado. They owned a trailer home and had a great time going places. After her death he moved to California. Their children:

7-2 ALTA EULALA McKAUGHAN: born 6 December 1899, Quay, Oklahoma. Died 16 February 2001, age 101. Married FRANK ALBERT DOTTER 20 September 1924, Stillwater, Oklahoma, at the home of Rev. Williams. Frank, the son of Gus Dotter and Josephine Roesler, coming to Stillwater from Clafton, Kansas and settling 4 miles south of town in a little German settlement.

FRANK DOTTER: born 23 May 1895, Clafton, Kansas. He was an ambulance driver in France in the Army during World War 1. He was gassed, but never applied for a pension from it. He and his brothers owned the Dotter Brothers Garage, on the corner of 6th and Washington, in Stillwater, for many years. After the garage was sold, Frank went to work for Bryant Motors and then at Oklahoma State. He died 31 March 1977, while visiting their daughter in St. Petersburg, Florida. They are buried at Sunset Memorial Cemetary, Stillwater, Oklahoma. Their children:

8-1 PATSY DELL DOTTER, Major, retired, born 27 November 1925, Stillwater, Oklahoma. She recieved her nursing degree from City-County Hospital, Ft. Worth, Texas, 1947. For many years she was a surgical nurse and also a Red Cross nurse. In 1957, she joined the US Airforce Nursing Corp. Her stations:

PATSY DELL married WILLIAM HARVEY WALDING, Col. retired, 30 December 1972, Stillwater, Oklahoma. He was an airforce helicopter pilot, serving two hitches in Viet Nam. He died 30 November 1973, buried in the Military Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama.

Patsy Dell retired to North Richald Hills, Texas where she returned to college to get her Horticulture degree. She is active in her Church, volunteers work at NEED Center. a guide for the Botanical Gardens, donates one day a week at the Medical Plaza Hospital, works on the other nurses days of f at a rest home and is past President of the Newcomers Club. They had no children.

8-2 JONITA DOTTER: (named after two of Alta's friends, Josephine and Juanita): born 8 September 1928, Stillwater, OKlahoma. She went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company just out of high school Retired from that company in 1982, after 35 years. She is now Director of the Stillwater Elderly Nutrition Site. She married CHESTER MILLIGAN 21 June 1952, in Stillwater. She retired to Stillwater. She is past President of American Legion Auxiliary. Their child:

8-4 KENNETH LEE DOTTER: born 22 August 1937, Stillwater, OKlahoma. Married FRANCES ANN RAINES , daughter of Leo Elliot Raines and Eva Gladys Miller. Kenneth was in naval reserve for 12 years. He has his A. and E. license, is an airplane mechanic and airplane parts man at Ponca City, Oklahoma. They live in Winfield, Kansas. Their child:

7-3 ALICE ALBA McKAUGHAN: born 12 November 1902, Fredonia, Kansas. She has her BS from Oklahoma State in home economics, MS from Iowa State, specializing in sewing. She taught high school home economics in Jenks and Wewoka High Schools before her marriage to OTTO OLEN 23 November 1934, in Tulsa, OKlahoma. At that time, a woman could not teach after she married. Otto, born 23 February 1898 in Dresburg, Germany. He came to New York when he saw what Hitler was doing in Germany and he didn't like what he saw. He was a machinist. He died 9 March 1947 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Alice was one of the pioneer textile painting instructors, teaching in the Tulsa night school for many years. Her class grew so large, she eventually co-authored a textile painting instruction book, with her sister, Hazel, to use in her classes-Hazel doing the sketching and Alice doing the instructions. This book had three printings, and sold all over United States and several foreign countries. After Otto's death, Alice went into full time work as a home economist and was sent to Stillwell, Oklahoma to work with the Indians. She then transferred to Liberal, Kansas to work in Stward County, where she retired back to Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1965. She moved to Kerrville, Texas in 1976 where she remained.

Alice continued to stay active in her church work, the First Christian Church of Kerrville, where she was the historian. She and sister Hazel spent five years researching and writing the history of the church for its 100th Anniversary in 1985, of which time each member received a copy. She was a volunteer at the Gazebo-Gift Shop at Hill Country Arts Fountation, having been co- chairman for the management for three years. She was a charter member, Volunteer worker and permanent Board member of Heart of the Hills Hospice. She was a life-time member of Kerrville Art Club. She was an artist and craftsman. They had no children. He died 4 October 1994, Kerrville. Both buried in McKaughan Family plot, Fairlawn Cemetery, Stillwater, Oklahoma.

7-4 HAZEL JOSEPHINE McKAUGHAN: born 30 May 1911, Neodesha, Kansas. She married her childhood sweetheart and only boy friend, CECIL WILLIAM BARNES 4 June 1930 in Perry, Oklahoma. When they were in the 4th grade, Cecil would walk with her up to two blocks from home and then would leave her for he was afraid daddy would spank him. Cecil, the son of Charlie Barnes and Emma Cora Bastion of Stillwater. This was during the depression so they both had to work hard to stay in college. Hazel baby sat and cleaned houses for people. Cecil worked at the College post office at noons and drove the city bus at nights. A year before they were to graduate, Cecil got a job with the Goverment with Soil Conservation. They were sent to Salina, Kansas. From there to Hawaii to set up the Soil Conservation Office there. From there to Washington D.C.for OSS & NATO under the Eisenhower Administration, to Ft. Worth, Texas and Red Stone Arsonal, Texarkana, Texas, with War Assets, Administration, back to Washington, then to Kelly Airforce Base, San Antonio, Texas where they retired. When the girls started to school, Hazel also started working for the Government. When she retired, she had the highest grade a woman had ever reached at Kelly Airforce Base.

Cecil graduated from Oklahoma State and also recieved his degree in ministry at TCU, Ft. Worth. For years before they retired, he filled the pulpit if any of the Christian Church ministers in the San Antonio district was ill or on vacation. He also was the minister for two missions that didn't have enough money to pay a minister a livable wage. After he retired, he went into full time ministry, first in Uvalde, then Lampassas, then Cleburne, Texas where he had a massive heart attack and had to quit. They moved to their cabin retreat on top of Mount Wesley at Kerrville, Texas. They made that cabin into a beautiful, comfortable home, Cecil doing the carpentry and Hazel being the "Honey Doer". Cecil died of a heart attack 23 May 1973.

Hazel and Cecil were always very active with the youth groups at their churches. For instance, one of the many cases: The Christian Chuch in San Antonio owned a warehouse in middle of Mexican town in San Antonio. The purpose was to have activities there to keep the children busy and off the streets but the Mexican children, mostly Catholic, had little to do with them so Hazel and Cecil decided to take it over and try to build it up. It is called Inman Center. They painted and fixed it up and everytime they got all the windows in , the kids would break them out so Cecil decided to catch the culprits. Hazel took the car and he stayed for the night. Not long after, a rock came sailing through the window so Cecil ran out and caught one of the boys. Rather than calling the police, Cecil made a deal with the boy that he had to work off so many hours at Inman Center after school. By the time the boy had finished working off his time, he was stuck. He was a very bright boy and Cecil found scholarships for him to attend college and graduate school. He graduated with a law degree but this young man by this time, decided to come back to Inman Center and work, which he now is the Director. At Hazel's funeral, he told us this story and said that if it hadn't been for Hazel and Cecil Barnes, he would be where most of his childhood friends were; dead or in jail.

Hazel continued very active in her church as long as she could. She held several offices, local, state and nationally in the Christian Church. She helped research her church and write the Kerrville First Christian Church History, with her sister Alice, for their 100th Anniversary. She designed and made felt banners for the church for holidays. Designed the stained glass windows for the sanctuary, was a member of the Woman's division of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of Hill Country Art Foindation, charter member of the Hill Country Art Foundation Auxiliary, co-chairman of the Gazebo Craft Shop for four years, a member of the Board at Hill Top Nursing Home, and a Member of the Board at Inman Center, San Antonio. A member of the Kerrville Art Club. She was an artist and craftsman. Hazel died 13 June 1983, Kerrville, after a five year bout with cancer. Both are buried at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Kerrville. Their children:

7-5 MINNIEBELL McKAUGHAN: FIBA, (one word, no middle name, named after her mother): born 14 March 1921, Quay, Oklahoma. Moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma with her parents when she was three months old where she was raised and educated. Attended Oklahoma State, University. Married MAX PRESTON PERKINS 21 January 1943, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Max, the son of Charles Lee Perkins and Harriet Zula Cutter from Castana, Iowa to Sapulpa, Oklahoma where Max was born 23 November 1915. Max was a Civil Servant, retiring as Chief of Region 5, Utilazation Branch of General Services Administration, April 1978. They retired to Kerrville, Texas where Max died 14 February 1980. Buried in the Garden of Memories, Kerrville. Minniebell is an artist and craftsman, working mostly with oils and stained glass. The money recieved from sales of her work has financed this research of our genealogy. She busies herself doing volunteer work in Kerrville. Was co-chairman of the management of the Hill County Gazebo Gift Shop for 8 years, Volunteer and charter member of the Heart of the Hills Hospice, is a member of Hill Country Arts Foundation, Hill Country Arts Foundation Auxiliary, Trinity Arts Guild and Foundation, Bedford, Texas, Texas Historical Society, Kerrville Genealogical Society, Charter member of the Scots of the Texas Hill Country, 21st Century Award for Achievement, Whose Who of 2002, Member of International Biographical Association, a member of Saint Peters Episcopal Church, and has worked on the family geneaolgy since 1955.
