6-7 ALTA PEARL McKAUGHAN (called Pearl): born 31 January 1884, Cloud County, Kansas. Died 17 June 1974, Cleveland, OK. Married ROBERT ERVIN LITTLE, (called Rob.) 14 July 1906, Tarlton, Oklahoma. by Rev. Andrew Jackson Moore. He born 19 August 1879, Ipava, Illinois. died 6 January 1936. Pearl was a really good worker. She was a beautiful seamstress. She had more than enough hand pieced, hand quilted quilts to give each of her four children and fifteen grandchildren when she passed away. She did all kinds of crochet and beautiful handwork. She also performed the farm chores and fardening on the family farm where she continued to live with her youngest daughter, Arla Jean, after the death of her husband. In 1950, Texaco Oil Company drilled seven new wells on her eighty-acre farm, bringing the total to eight. She stayed on the farm until 1953. That year, she moved to a house she bought in Cleveland, Oklahoma, where she lived until her death. In 1954, her sister, Cora McKaughan, moved from Canon City, Colorado to luve with her. Cora stayed in Pearl's home until her death. Pearl spent the last six months of her life in her saughter, Arla Jean Cruzen's home. Sge was 90 years old. Robert luved in Ipava, Illinois until 1891 when he went with his family to Clayton, Oklahoma. They came to Oklahoma for the opening of the Cherokee Strip. They lived at Clayton until his father obtained a homestead in the run of 1893. Robert grew up on that homestead. Around the turn of the century, oil was discovered on and around his father's farm. The discovery was called the Landerdale field. When wells were being drilled, Robert helped with the drilling and worked at the refinery located about a mile from the farm. He and his brother, Charles, also had a water drilling rig, which they used around the area. He built a Service Station besides gas and oil, he also sold groceries and general merchandise. He sold the store in 1927 and went to work for Carter Oil Company in Seminole, OKlahoma during the oil boom. At first he was a warehouse keeper and later he was a Pumper. In 1934, he moved the family back to his farm in Pawnee County, Oklahoma, and worked in the nearby refinery. Their children:

William Robert (Bill) Little, 65, of Bella Vista, AR. died June 3 1991 at Bates Memorial Hospital.
Born April 24, 1926 in Pawnee County, Oklahoma to James Little and Verona Little, he moved to Bella Vista in December 1989 from Liberal, Kansas. He served in the Army and operated anti-aircraft guns during World War 11.
He was involved in the service occupation in Bremen, Germany. He worked for Dia-Log Company for 28 years where he was a wire line operator. He was a member of the First Landmark Baptist Church of Bentonville. He was preceeded in death by one brother, Harold E. Little.
Survivors include his mother, Verona Little of Hoisington, Kansas, his wife, Betty Little of the home: one son, Robert M. Little of Garden City, Kansas; one daughter, Billie Jean Quisenberry of Bentonville; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Service is set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Bella Vista Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today with the family being there from 7-8 p.m. Burial will be in Holsington, Kansas at the Hoisington City Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bella Vista Funeral Home.

He was a sergeant in World War II with Patton's 3rd Army at Rhine, Germany. He married BETTY AILEEN WINTERS 8 July 1944. She was born 6 January 1927, near Shidler, Oklahoma. He worked for Dia-Log Oil Company for 28 years where he was a wire line operator. Bill died 3 June 1991 at Bentonville, Arkansas and is buried in Hoisington, Kansas. 6-8 CORA LEONA McKAUGHAN: born 21 March 1866, Cloud County, Kansas. She came to Oklahoma with her parents in 1893. Cora never married. She graduated from Central State College at Edmond, Oklahoma and taught school for many years in Pawnee, Cleveland and Ingalls, Oklahoma. After her father's death, she took care of her mother until her mother's death. They moved to Canon City, Colorado during World War II where Cora worked in an office of a defense plant. After her mother's death, Cora moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where she worked until she retired. She then made her home with her sister, Pearl, in Cleveland, Oklahoma where she died 14 October 1958, buried in the Jennings Oklahoma Cemetery.
Aunt Cora was very prim and proper. She had very long, thick, beautiful auburn hair which she braided into one long braid and then wrapped it around and around her head. Having been a teacher, when she spoke, she spoke with authority but she loved us all and we loved her.She was a great inspiration to me. When she visited us, she and I would talk for hours. I remember her stressing that you can be anything you want to be if you work hard enough. She had the most beautiful penmanship of anyone I have ever seen. I used to practice for hours trying to write just half as well as she did.
6-9 WALTER VERNON McKAUGHAN: born 29 June 1889, Cloud County, Kansas. He Came to Oklahoma with his parents in 1893. He married MAUDE GILLASPIE 26 November 1907, Pawnee, Oklahoma. She the daughter of Benjamin L. Gillaspie and Juliette Ward. Walter teamed in the Texas and Oklahoma oilfields for many years. They then moved to Penrose, Colorado where Walter was a prison guard and he and his son ran a dairy. They moved to Yakima, Washington, where Walter died 19 February 1954. Maude moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma where she died January 1973. They are buried in Hallett, Oklahoma. Their chiId:

5-7 COLUMBUS F. (Lum) McKAUGHAN/McCOlN (twin to Francis Newton): born 31 July 1848, North Carolina. He went to Georgia and then to Kansas with his parents. Married CAMILLA FRANCES WOMACK 1 October 1870, by his father, Rev. William McKaughan, Greenwood County, Kansas, under the name of Culumbus F. McCaughan. Camilia's last name on the license is spelled Warnick. Her obituary says she was born 23 June 1853, Sangamon County, Illinois, later moving to Cheropa, Kansas. They moved to Silverton, Colorado in 1881, from Custer County, Colorado. On census, Columbus is listed as being part owner of the Turkois. This appears to be an inn for later she is listed as being an inn landlady. For some reason, Columbus was in Salt Lake City, Utah on 1 November 1886, when he died. I feel he was traveling since his family was in Colorado. Possibly he was a freighter, since some of his brothers were also in that profession and since there was a lot of activity between Colorado and Utah at that time, freighting goods to the Mormans.
The 1900 Colorado census lists Frances McCoin living in Silverton. They had two daughters but only one daughter was with her at the time. She owned her own home.

Una McCoin Robbins, Married (2) 30 May 1908 to JOSEPH T. HINKLEY, two popular young people were married Monday night by Rev. Fred Carter, of the congregation Parsonage. It was a quiet wedding with few friends present.
Joseph was born 1877, Illinois. Una died 14 March 1935.
ERCELLE ROBBINS, age 21, died October 26, 1918 of Spanish influenza. She was the only daughter of Mrs. Una J. Hinkley. Died at the family home on Snowdon. She was ill about a week. She was born in Silverton and grew to young womanhood here. She was a companion to her grandmother, a kind and considerate daughter to her mother. Funeral was Sunday, Burial at Hillside.
With the death of this girl, unmarried, it appears there are no descendants of Columbus F. McCoin and Frances Womack living.

5-8 JULIUS SPATE McKAUGHAN/McCOIN: born 8 November 1850, High Point, North Carolina. Moved to Georgia and then to Kansas with his parents. Married SARAH FRANCES OSBURN 26 September 1873 in Greenwood County, Kansas, by Rev. J. W. Goskirk. Sarah born 30 July 1854, Buckanan County, Missouri, the daughter of Willian Franklin Osburn and Mary Barnes. She was related to Marion Taylor Ozburn, Lovina Elizabeth McCoin's husband. They went from Kansas to California with her parents and then on to Oregon where they settled. Julius was a freighter.
Sarah died 4 December 1888, at Crook Box, Jefferson County, Oregon, while Julius was away on his freighting route, leaving only the children there with her. The oldest boy had to ride miles to the nearest neighbor to get some help. Julius never remarried so it was up to Clara Minnie, who was 9 years old at the time, to raise her baby brother, Walter. She told her niece what a time she had with him. If she got to go to school, she had to take Walter with her and he wouldn't behave. He kept crawling under desks, so she didn't get to go to school very much. Julius Spate McCoin died 31 October 1928, Pendleton, Oregon. They were borh buried in the Prineville, Oregon Cemetery. Wilson Riley was a dry good merchant. On one tax record it lists a business of "Montgomery and Riley . We do not know of the Riley was Wilson or not. They had 8 children but apparently only four lived to adulthood. The daughter Jessie was dead by 1910. Patty was able to find two marriage licenses. Their known children:

After her mother had died and her father had transferred to Emporia, Kansas, Serena lived with her sister and family, Lovina Elizabeth McKaughan Osburn. I was told by Irene Sherman Schatterback, one of Lovina's descentants, that the old ladies said Serena was "Too smart to live", an old wives tale. Serena read all the time. If Lovina asked her to dust the furniture, Serena had a dust cloth in one hand and a book in the other, reading while she
dusted.

4-5 REV. FORRESTER McKAUGHAN/McKOIN (2) (twin to Rev.Jessie): born 1 May 1815, Rowan County, North Carolina. Information from his Bibles says he was a member of the Protestant Church for thirty-five years. This would have been the Protestant Methodist Church which was very popular in that area for many years. He then changed to the Christian Church where he was a minister in Guilford County, North Carolina. The church, now gone, was next to what is now the A. and I. Cemetery. Another demonination built across the road from the cemetery and now uses it. He and several of his family are buried in this cemetery. On one census, he spelled his name McKoin however, later when gravestones were bought, it is spelled McCaughan.

After Sallie Parrish McKaughan died, Rev. Forrester McKaughan married (2) REBECCA PERKINS 20 October 1862. Rebecca born 17 June 1815, died 16 August 1883. No children by this second marriage. Rev. Forrester died suddenly in the pulpit of the Mt. Zion Church, Surry Circuit, while attending a revival, 30 September 1883.
I have only a couple generations worked out for Rev. Forrester McKaughan. understand someone in Kernersville has been working on his line. I have through the years written to several McKaughan's of his line in Kernersville but so far have not had any of them answer so they must not want to share their information.
Rev. Forrester McKaughan's Bible left a multitude of information he and other members of the family had written down. It is from his Bible that we found my great-grandfather's, Rev. William McCoin, obituary. Rev. William died after Rev. Forrester so someone had added this to the Bible, for which we are thankful.

November 1833. Soon after they married, Samuel went to the Civil War. Elizabeth Ann gave birth to a daughter. Three years later, 2 March 1865, Elizabeth died. Samuel knew that he had a daughter but he did not know his wife had died until after the war.

5-5 BURRELL TEMPLE McKAUGHAN: born 21 April 1845, North Carolina. When Burrell was young and the Civil War broke out, his beliefs being with the North, rather than the South. He went to Ohio where he changed his name to Benjamin Temple McCoy and he joined the Union army. Af ter the war, he changed his name to Benjamin Temple McCoin. He married EMILY EMMA FALSON 13 December 1868, Canton, Ohio. She born 2 March 1846. When
Benjamin died, 14 July 1893, to be able to bury him with military honors, Emily had to change his name back to McCoy, the one he fought under, so on his tomestone, it reads: Benjamin Temple McCoy. His family was raised McCoin and not until 1923, when a grandson was in the Veteran's Hospital in Oteen, North Carolina, had any of his descendants visited the south.

This letter was written by a grandson of Burrell Temple McKaughan, to his relatives in Ohio, while he was in the Veteran's Hospital in Oteen, North Carolina. He died there one month after he wrote this letter.

Dear Cousin and Aunt:
This leaves me down in the country where the first McKaughans originated. I have heard from lots of grandpa's people since I am here.
There is a brother and a sister of grandpa's still living. Uncle J. Newton McKaughan of State Road, North Carolina, and Aunt Laura Whittaker of Cameron, North Carolina. They are grandpa's youngest brother and sister, both of a feeble and aged condition. Uncle De Kalb's son, Rev. J.A. McKaughan of 50 Victoria Ave., Ashville, North Carolina, visits me daily here at the hospital.
These southern McKaughans , as they spell it, are very simple, religions, a type of good old mountain people. I came here purposely to link up our Northern and Southern McKaughans which have been separated with no trace of each other for over 60 years. It was almost a fruitless effort, but I finally succeeded. As I believe I am the first Northern McKaughan kinsman to ever enter North Carolina since grandpa traited in the Civil War. I surely do appreciate being among the McKaughan clan here. It would be nice if you and Wesley would write great Aunt Laura and Great Uncle J. Newton whose addresses are on the first page. There is a also a Wesley McKaughan among them here. The real way to spell the name is McKaughan as grandpa evidently assumed McCoin after going north. I have lots to tell you and the relatives of these beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains when I get home. Answer at once. Give Wes and Mary my address.

This complete line of Jesse Newton McCoin and Margaret Roxie Rigby was researched by three of their grand-daughters: Ruby Pearl Crissman Miletich, Gladys Moverene Crissman Guyes and Minnie Othello Crissman Culler, and printed into a book "OUR McKAUGHAN/McCOIN AND CRISSMANS" in 1978, Library of Congress catalog number 79-63031.
Published by: Fayetteville Office Supply Company, 415 E. Russell, Fayetteville, North Carolina 18301, November 1978. Moverene, the only sister now living, gave me permission to use the material.
On page 46 of the book, titled "MEMORIES OF OUR GRANDPARENTS" Moverene writes, in part, and I quote:
"Our fondest memory of Grandpa, and probably that of most of his grandchildren, was that of being invited to sit between his legs, (he was heavy - he had no lap), in his rocking chair in front of the fireplace. The minute he came into the room, anyone sitting in "his" rocker (and that seemed to be the favorite chair of his grand children) got up immediately, but you were always invited to share it with him. "
"As a youngster, I thought the story Mother told us about Grandpa, his new boots and the Blue Army was most exciting. Grandpa was about 12 years old and the proud owner of a new pair of boots made for him by his brother. One of the soldiers passing through spotted his new boots and demanded them. As the story goes , Grandpa put up quite an argument and was ready to fight the whole Union Army until his brother persuaded him to give them up on the promise that he would make him another pair."
"One of my most vivid memories is a visit to Aunt Pearl and Uncle Claude Simmon's home with our grandparents. There was not enough room in the car for all of us, so Othello and I got to ride in the buggy with Grandpa. At that time Grandpa looked like a huge man to me and he had a very deep voice. I can still hear him calling out to the mule (or horse), "Giddap, Bob": I especially remember him singing (as we rode along) at the top of his malodious bass voice the sacred hymn Amazing Grace."
"Cousin Reba Willcoxen Vestal also told of her mother, Elizabeth McCoin Willcoxen, crying when the Primitive Baptist Church at Grassy Creek, near Elkins, North Carolina, founded by her grandfather, Jesse Alfred McKaughan, was taken over by the Methodist denomination."
