Encoding/Decoding

Many people have trouble decode a file after downloading. There are 3 simple formats you need to know: MacBinary, BinHex, and uu. MacBinary. You can use the followinf suffixes to help you recognize the origin of the file you have downloaded or want to decode. You might want to use this chart for basic suffixes in your Browser Prefs.

SUFFIXES TIPS
.bin MacBinary
.hqx StuffIt Archives
.uu or .uue uuencoding

Stuffit Expander is a utility used to decode and decompress at the same time. Stuffit Expander 4.0.1is used to decompreess and transform bin., hqx., and uu.files. This handy utility is made by the Aladdin company.Try Aladdyn's full directory for more queries.

UULite 2.0 is a uu encoding/decoding software tool from Peanut Software. It is not a great utility to upload files but it is sure useful for translating any kind of binary. It is a 29 dollar shareware but when used as a default decoder for NewsWatcher it is worth the cost.

There is a handy product to add to your Stuffit Expander, it is called Dropstuff Expander, without this product Stuffit Expander can only decompress Binhex files. But Remember, Dropstuff Enhancer 4.0 is not a free shareware, it is $30.

  • Another handy product is Remove Password. This program helps to remove the password in locked Stuffit Expander archives. It works great.

Mac Binary II +1.0.2 helps you to decode bin.file simply drop it in the Mac Binary Icon Folder and same thing goes for encoding. Right now this product is the only one in the market which can support Binary standard extensions A good support for Stuffit Expander.

Binhex 4.0 is an encoding/decoding utility written by Yves Lempereur. This software was crated long time ago but it has its certain capabilities and charms.

DeHQX 2.0.1 is a BinHex decoder created by Peter Lewis. It is a newly created product, and it contains many features and options which are not available in BinHex 4.0. Peter Lewis gives this product a high rating when combined with the new technology of Stuffit Expander.

UUundo 1.0 is a uudecoder written by Aaron Giles who created JPEGView . This tool also works well with Newswatcher and other new browsers. It's also worth downloading.

UUcd 2.4.3 is a freeware. A very similiar product to UUlite. It is a uu encoding/decoding utility which many excellent features make it worth a free download! It has a good encoding capability while for decoding it lacks many features. But what the heq its FREE!!!.

    Compression/Expansion

Expanssion and Compression are very easy to handle when knowing the certain suffixes. Remember that suffixes are very important when it comes to downloading or modificating

    SUFFIXES TIPS
    .sit StuffIt archive
    .zip Zip Archive
    .cpt Compact Pro archive
    .gz GNU gzip
    .Z or .z UNIX compress
    .tar UNIX tar archive
    .arc ARC
    .pkg AppleLink package

If you have the proper tool or utility at hand, you won't have to worry about the technical terms

Although the next to are encoding and decoding tools, they are also compressors and decompressors.

Stuffit Expander 4.0.1 For more description plese take a look above in the Stuffit Expander section

MacGzip 1.0 is a freeware utility written by Jean Gailly. It is used to compress and expand files using the .gz format. The .gz format is very unique therefore its hard to decode or encode just like the UNIX format. If you have trouble compressing the file, you should first encode it into a MacBinary or BinHex Archive or Shell account. If you have trouble using this file, its better for you to contact the writter or producer of this program.

ZipIt 1.3.5 is a $15 shareware written by Tommy Brown. It is mostly used for the compression of .zip Archives. Zip files are mostly used for the encoding of graphics(Jpegs, JFIF, GIF, PICT) Zplit expands .zip files and decodes .bin archives (MacBinary) as well as .hqx. archives (Binhex). It is a good tool for uploading files.

Dropstuff Enhancer 4.0 For more description plese take a look above in the Drop Stuff section

Compact Pro costs 25 dollar to register and it was written by Bill Goodman. This utility allows you to compress and expand files and documents. Compact Pro is mostly used for its compression capabilities. What I use it most for its to fit certain material into a folder or floppy disk. I like to call it the "squeezer".

Suntar 2.0.5 is a freeware utility written by Sauro and Gabriele Speranza. This utility roots come from the Unix system format. IIt is used to compress .tar archives and its format cannot be handled by DropStuff. Suntar will soon come with better features and bug fixes

    Graphic Viewers/Converters

AddJFIFcomment 1.0.1is a 8.637k freeware application created by Victor Tan. It is a very simple utility for attaching comments to JFIF (AKA JPEG) files. This is particularly useful if you're preparing JFIF graphics files for distribution on the net and want to make sure that information like the origin, contents, and copyright of the photo travel with the image. In this case, they are bound into the image file itself. Viewers like JPEGView will display these comments. For more info also visit The AddJFIFcomment Homepage

FlattenMooVis a 9.657k free application by Robert Hennessy. It is a very simple little utility for flattenning Macintosh QuickTime movies. This "flatenning" allows them to be used on other platforms that also support QuickTime (PCs, SGIs, etc.). A flattened file is one in which all media references are contained in one file. This utility uses the QuickTime FlattenMovie call to move the moov resource into the data fork of the MooV file.

GIFConverter 2.3.7 is a 469k free application by Kevin A. Mitchell. It reads and writes the following graphics file formats: GIF, MacPaint, PICT, RIFF, RLE, Thunderscan, Startup Screen, TIFF and JPEG (with or without QuickTime). In addition, it writes EPSF files. Also provided are image enhancement, cropping, color table selection, and dithering features. This copy of version 2.3.7 is no different from the version 2.3.7 except that this distribution includes the option of paying the new, lower $30 shareware fee through the Kagi shareware service. Also included in a separate file is GIFConverter's online documentation. I personally think you should download it, Iheve it in my computer and use it to create compound gifs for my pages.

GraphicConverter 2.2.2 is a 1710k free application by Thorsten Lemke which can import the following formats: PICT, Startup-Screen, MacPaint, TIFF (uncompressed, packbits, CCITT3/4 and lzw), RIFF, PICS, 8BIM, 8BPS/PSD, JPEG/JFIF, GIF, PCX/SCR, GEM-IMG/-XIMG, BMP (RLE compressed BMP«s also), ICO/ICN, PIC (16 bit), FLI/FLC, TGA, MSP, PIC (PC Paint), SCX (ColoRIX), SHP, WPG, PBM/PGM/PPM, CGM (only binary), SUN , RLE, XBM, PM, IFF/LBM, PAC, Degas, TINY, NeoChrome, PIC (ATARI), SPU/SPC, GEM-Metafile, Animated NeoChrome, Imagic, ImageLab/Print Technic, HP-GL/2, FITS, SGI, DL, XWD, WMF, Scitex-CT, DCX, KONTRON, Lotus-PIC, Dr. Halo, GRP, VFF, Apple IIgs, AMBER, TRS-80, VB HB600, ppat, QDV, CLP, IPLab, SOFTIMAGE, GATAN, CVG, MSX, PNG, ART, RAW, PSION, SIXEL, PCD and ST-X.

Version 2.2.2 includes the following bugfixes and improvements: (Kodak Photo CD) import added, Bug in slide show fixed, ST-X import, Protocol works in convert more, Drag Manager enclosed in complete package,ÊBug in HPGL import fixed, Resolution detection in TIFFs works with cm, Bug in import of 32 bit IMGs fixed and other more. Personally I think it is very proffesional and complicated but those who are professionals should download it right away.

JPEGView 3.3.1 is a 792k free application by Aaron Giles. It is a flexible image utility designed to allow quick, high-quality viewing of the most common image formats, including JPEG, JFIF, GIF, PICT, Baseline and LZW-compressed TIFF, Windows BMP, StartupScreen, and MacPaint. JPEGView can also convert between QuickTime JPEG and JFIF-standard JPEG files. Version 3.0 added a number of substantial new features, including full AppleScript support, new high-quality dithering routines, a greatly improved slide show, floating windows, etc.

Version 3.3.1 differs from 3.3 only in that the About box has been changed to reflect the author's new address. But to tell you the truth JPEGView is simply the best image application by far. At least a 70% of the people that have graphic applications own this very handy app. Heq I have it. For more info visit the JPEGWiew Homepage.

NIH Image 1.5.9 is a 1303k free application by Wayne Rasband, is a public domain image processing and analysis program for the Macintosh. It has painting and image manipulation tools, a macro language, tools for measuring areas, distances and angles, and for counting things. Using an "AV" Mac or a framegrabber card, it can record sequences of images to be played back as a movie. It can invoke user-defined convolution matrix filters, such as Gaussian. It can import raw data in tab-delimited ASCII, or as 1 or 2-byte quantities. It also does histograms and even 3-D plots. It is limited to 8-bits/pixel, though the 8 bits map into a color lookup table. It runs on any color capable Mac. It is a "fat" binary that runs natively on Power Macs. Documentation in MS Word 5.1 format is included. This app requires at least 1.5MB and 256 colors and I have no comment for it because I have never downloaded it but suit yourself by clicking on the linked name above. For more info visit this site or the NIH Image Master Site.

Show! 1.0.3 is a 204k free application by Henk W. den Bok which allows you to manage sets of previews very much like what one would do with slides on a backlit table. The previews are taken or created from original image files that you have located somewhere on your file system. Once Show! has imported or created the previews you can arrange them, move or copy them between documents, or pass the corresponding originals onto JPEGView for a slide show or tosimply open the original images for full-scale viewing. Version 1.0.3 adds the obligatory bug fixes, plus preview sorting, support for previews built into JFIF files, the use of viewers other than JPEGView, and gracious handling of CR-ROMs. Show requires System 7 and Quick Draw. For more info. contact H.W.denBok@fys.ruu.nl

Sparkle 2.4.5 is a 1154k free application by Maynard Handley which plays MPEG and QuickTime movies and can convert movies from one format to the other. It uses the familiar QuickTime movie controller as the basis for its interface. Given sufficient memory, it will open multiple movies at once. Users of MacWeb or NCSA Mosaic will find Sparkle handy to have around as it is the best way to view MPEG movies on the Mac. You can find both of those browsers in my Browsers Page. Version 2.4.5 includes various bug fixes, and supports QuickTime-style dithering. This app is very tricky because it requires the following things to run: QuickTime, System 7.5, Thread Manager, Sound Manager 3.1 and ObjectSupportLib (Power Mac only). For more info. just e-mail me. or visit the Sparkle Master Site

Transparency 1.0 is a 37k free application by Aaron Giles which allows you to designate one color in a GIF image which is to be treated as transparent. The upshot of this is that the background over which the image is plotted will show through all the pixels of the designated transparent "color." The primary need for such a capability is in HTML documents, where images are plotted against the arbitrary background (usually some shade of gray) of a Web client's window. If the background color of your image doesn't happen to match the background color of a user's Web client, it doesn't look good at all. However, by filling the background of your image with a unique (and hopefully low-key) color and then designating that color as transparent, the problem is solved and your graphic meshes cleanly with the background of any user's Web client. Note, though, that not all Web clients currently support transparent GIFs. For the Macintosh, transparent GIF support debuted in version 1.0a2.1 of MacWeb, and version 2.0a3 of NCSA Mosaic Mac. You can also find these Browsers in my Browsers Page.

Transparency now warns you if you try to close an image without first saving it unlike 1.0b4. To me Transparency is a real charm since it helps you create detailed gif by making the certain parts you like transparent and helping you making compound gif's.
