This was the most lavish ever production of the classic musical, staged in
the large Prince Edward theatre. I had a good seat in the front row of the grand
circle. The show was very different in content to the amateur production I saw,
and a far better experience. The show had 'timeless masterpiece' written all over it,
and with the beautiful sets, I couldn't believe I was enjoying it as much as the
modern musicals, but I was.
There was a real feeling of being there, due to the brilliant lighting, and the
glorious sets such as the Cotton Blossom boat. The singing, acting, and orchestra
blended perfectly. Joe sand 'Ol' Man River' brilliantly, and Julie had a wonderful
voice. The only complaint about the characters was Magnolia, who's voice could have
been better. The 1st Act was totally enchanting.
The 2nd Act was also classic, though it was a bit too long, and 'Why do I Love You?'
wasn't sung by Magnolia and Gay as I think it should be. I can totally understand
anyone who says that Show Boat is the greatest musical of all time, it's a remarkable
achievement that's still great to see after 70 years.
Here are the songs and how much I enjoyed them:

The ending was lovely, and you felt like you'd experienced the entire lifetimes
of the characters. I'm extremely glad I decided to see this show before it closes.
