My favourite type of music, and probably my biggest interest, are musicals.
My first taste of musicals was when I tried out an Andrew Lloyd-Webber
compilation of my mums. 'Memory' from 'Cats' was the first song, and I couldn't
believe how beautiful it was. To this day it remains my favourite song of all
time. After that I gave my mums 'Phantom of the Opera' CD a go, and it was
the most affecting music I've heard in my life. It's a totally brilliant
experience to listen to it. I have now inherited this Phantom CD into my own
collection without my mum realising! :)
After that I gradually collected all of ALW's musicals. He is easily my favourite
composer, and I didn't think I would need anymore musicals once I had all of his.
I was wrong of course! I truely became a musicals fan when I realised there were
many other great musicals out there, and that musicals didn't have to be modern
to be good. Firstly I got into Boubil/Schonberg, the main rivals of ALW in recent
years, then I discovered the old classics from the 40's/50's/60's by Lerner/Loewe
and Rodgers/Hammerstein. Recently I have delved into Stephen Sondheim too.
I keep thinking that I have got every musical I need, but it is unlikely!

And finally, here is perhaps my favourite quote from any musical. It is from
'Paint your Wagon', the song is 'They call the wind Maria':
"Out here they got a name for rain, for wind and fire only, but when you're lost
and all alone, there ain't no word but lonely. And I'm a lost and lonely man,
without a star to guide me. Maria blow my love to me, I need my girl beside me..."
