Robert Barnard was born About 1614/1615 in England. He and His parents William E. Barnard (B. 1572 in , Kingston, Yorkshire, England) and Emily E. Nye (B. Abt 1590 in , Kingston, Yorkshire, England; Married in 1610 in Kingston, Yorkshire, England) and his brother, Thomas came to America in about 1640 and settled at Andover, Massachussetts. Thomas was one of the original ten owners of Nantucket Island, purchased from the Indians. The first ten were allowed each to pick another, and Thomas picked his brother, Robert. Thomas was later killed by Indians at Salisbury, Mass. Robert lived on Nantucket and died there. He married Joanna Harvey in 1640 or 1641 and they had at least six children. Robert and Joanna died in a canoe in the Sound coming back to the Island after shopping for furniture on the Cape. A third person in the canoe was able to hold on to the canoe until he could stand up on a shoal and right the canoe.
