Samuel Northup was born in 1820 in Otego,Otsego Co., NY, the child of George T. Northup and Wealthy Tracy .

The family very early in his life moved to Otsego County, New York from North Kingstown, R.I., and it is unclear whether Samuel was born prior to this move. The U.S. Census of 1880 lists him as having been born in Rhode Island, although his wife, Eunice VanSlyke was born in Otsego Co. That same census reports her asbeing 45 at the time, which would place her birth year as being around 1835. This places into doubt the accuracy of other records that show the birth dates of their children. In 1880, only one daughter was still home, Carrie at age 13. Theresa Caparco says Eunice was born in 1832. She also shows first daughter, Catherine as being born in 1839, so Samuel must have been married prior to Eunice.

Eunice died in 1911, and Samuel Northup died in 1891 in Otego, Otsego Co., NY.
