Thomas John Northup was born June 27, 1943 in Aberdeen, Wa., the son of Auguste and Leone Northup . He Married Dec. 27, 1969 to Barbara Jo Van Heuveln (born Oct. 2, 1950 in Port Angeles, Washington).
Thomas Northup lived in Clearwater, Washington until 1959, then for five years in Chiloquin, Oregon, where he graduated from high school in 1960. He attended Oregon State University, graduating in 1964 with a B.S. in General Science. Thomas entered the U.S. Coast Guard and graduated from Officers Candidate School in Yorktown, VA. in Feb. 1965, commissioned as an Ensign. He served aboard the cutter Northwind, an icebreaker based in Seattle, WA., participating in two arctic cruises, then was assigned to the Search and Rescue Center in Juneau, Alaska before receiving his discharge as a Lt(jg) in 1968. He attended the University of Washington, receiving a B.S. degree in Fisheries Science in 1970. Thomas worked for UW's Fisheries Research Institute in the Aleutian Islands and at La Conner, Washington. In 1973 he began a 25-year career with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, managing shellfish and marine fish resources on the Washington coast. He retired in 1998 to pursue a multitude of hobbies and interests, including: photography, gardening, woodworking and travel.
