David Claypool was born the first child to Warren and Brenda Claypool in August of 1944.
After finishing High School in Bemidji, Minnesota, David went with Chuck Northup to Washington state to pick strawberries for a time before he moved to San Francisco, where he went to school for drafting. He lived for a time with his Uncle Stanley Groth and later into an apartment at 180 Du Boce Street in San Francisco. He joined the US Army where he met and married Martha, in Germany while on active duty and they had four children:

Patrick was born May 5,1977

When David and Martha returned to Minnesota, he went to work for the Beltrami County surveyor, eventually becoming The Beltrami County Surveyor. They lived out toward Boot Lake South of Wilton, where, after the first house burned one winter night they built a huge new house, which they later had to let go and moved to Anoka County where he became the Ramsey County Surveyor. The twins had started college in Bemidji and lived on for a time there before moving South. David and Martha divorced in 1997.
