My Dunn Lineage
By Randall S. Treadway

Welcome to my Dunn Lineage Page. I have been working on this line for many many years now. Unfortunately, the Dunn lineage is hard to trace in Ireland, leaving us with sparse information. I believe that all the information below is correct, but if you find any discrepancies, please email me. I hope you find the information helpful to you. Thank you for dropping by. Enjoy.

Please remember each bit of information found here, or elsewhere, must be researched and proven by weight of evidence, via you, the researcher.

Descendants of Dennis Dunn

*Dennis Dunn was born ca 1800 in Ireland. I have seen some genealogies with Dennis being from Cork, and others where he died in Co. London, England, however, looking at the English Census records, that information did not pan out. Dennis married Margaret "Maggie" Murphy, this according to their son James' marriage record. Their children were:

1.  James Dunn (see 2nd generation), b: 10 Jul 1828, Ireland

2.  Patrick Dunn (Tentative), b: 1831, Ireland. I cannot say with any certainty that Patrick is the son of Dennis. There are simularities to James though. For instance there was a Patrick Dunn born 1831 in Ireland and baptized on 27 Mar 1831 in the Parish of Mountmellick and Clonaghdoo and Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin that may be Patrick (same place as James), however, that Patrick's father was listed as Thatron - a transcription error? Also, Patrick ended up in Sioux City as did James.
Patrick married Catherine Murphy in New York. I was not able to find either one of them in the 1870 New York Census. Their family was listed in the 1880, 1900 and 1910 Concord, Woodbury Co., Iowa Census records. Patrick died on 15 Sep 1913, leaving a Will dated 31 Jul 1913, probated 14 Oct 1913. Catherine died on 29 Dec 1918. Their children were:

     a. John Dunn, b: ca 1874, NY, d: 1874, NY

     b. Margaret Ann "Maggie" Dunn, b: 23 May 1878, Mamaroneck, Westchester Co., NY. She married Charles Kelly on 03 Jan 1899, Woodbury Co., IA. Charles was born on 09 Jan 1869, Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA. Their family was listed in the 1900 Woodbury Twp., Woodbury Co., IA Census, the 1910 and 1920 Perry, Plymouth Co., IA Census records.

     c. Elizabeth Angus "LIzzie" Dunn, b: 11 Feb 1880, Woodbury Co., IA. She married William Daniel Parks on 20 Nov 1900, Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA. William was born on 22 Jan 1873 in Lee Center, Lee Co., IL, the son of Joseph Franklin Parks and Mary Elizabeth Procunier. Their family was listed in the 1910 Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA Census, and the 1920 and 1930 Shelburne, Lyon Co., MN Census records. Lizzie died on 13 Nov 1965 and William died on 13 Oct 1953. The are buried in the Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA.

     d. Mary Alice "Mollie" Dunn, b: 16 Oct 1881, Woodbury Co., IA. She married Jacob William Bennett on 07 Apr 1902, Woodbury Co., IA. Jacob was born on 13 Aug 1878 in , the son of Ellias Bennett and Rachel Evans. Their family was listed in the 1910 Perry, Plymouth Co., IA Census, the 1920 Hungerford, Plymouth Co., IA Census, and the 1930 and 1940 Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA Census records. Mary died on 09 Jan 1968 and Jacob died on 16 Nov 1904. They are buried in the Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA.

     e. Sara Catherine Dunn, b: 24 Jul 1884, Woodbury Co., IA. She married Robert Martin Dressell on 23 Apr 1903, Woodbury Co., IA. Robert was born on 06 Dec 1876 in Brooklyn, New York City, NY, the son of Henry Dressell and Alice McGinnis. Sara married secondly to Michael Barrett on 03 Jun 1918, Butte, Silver Bow Co., MT. Michael was born in 1978 IN SD, the son of WIlliam Barrett and Sara Hendricks. Sara died in Joaquin Co., CA (Per CA Death Index records). She is buried in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., MN.

     f. Infant daughter, b: unknown, d: stillborn

From the Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa Families by Marjorie Bennett McArthur:   Patrick Dunn was born in Ireland about 1831; the area is still questionable – Cork, Kilkenny or Wexford. He came to the United States about 1861 and remained in the New York area. He married Catharine Murphy about 1872 in Mamaroneck, Westchester County, New York. Two children were born in New York; John about 1874 was stillborn; and Margaret Ann ‘Maggie’, 23 May 1878.
When Margaret was only a few months old, the family moved to Woodbury County, Sioux City, Iowa, on a farm north and east of Leeds. It was difficult to make a living as there were few settlers in the area and many Indians living along the Floyd River in caves and tents. They would often come to the Dunn farm seeking food –milk, eggs, bread. Grasshoppers destroyed the crops several years in succession. Elizabeth Agnus ‘Lizzie’ was born 11 February 1880. Mary Alice ‘Mollie’ was born 16 October 1881. Another daughter died in infancy.
On 22 November 1881 they moved to their new home a mile and a half straight east of Leeds – Concord Township. There were eighty acres on which they had an apple orchard and raised various fruits, livestock and grains. Patrick raised his own tobacco ‘down near the barn’. All the girls went to the country school a mile away from their home and then went to Sioux City. They attended St Joseph’s Catholic School, while working for their board and room. ‘Mollie’ especially was so happy when Friday evening came so she could go home to the farm to help ‘Pa’ with the chores and field work.
Patrick was very fond of his own daughters and all his grandchildren. His favorite expression upon greeting their buggies as they arrived was ‘By the Law, By the Law’. Catharine treated the youngsters with her fruits and jellies stored in their basement. Patrick wrote many letters and cards to his daughters and families – always keeping in close touch. Fire destroyed their home, claiming most everything they owned. Having rebuilt, Patrick continued to farm until shortly before his death, 15 September 1913.
Patrick had a brother, James and a sister, Mary, who also came to the United States. James came to Sioux City in 1869 to homestead land, gaining title thereof 20 August 1875. Mary made her home in Connecticut.
Catharine Murphy came to the United States as a little girl about three years old. Her ‘Aunt Eliza’ raised her and a sister, Mary, who died at age 18. She lived in New York assisting her Aunt and Uncle in their haberdashery. She was asphyxiated from gas fumes in her home in Leeds, 29 December 1917.

3.  Mary Dunn (Tentative) , b: unknown, possibly Ireland. She went to Connecticut.
