My Treadway Lineage
By Randall S. Treadway

I would love to thank The Genealogy Pod at Tripod, and Vicki Lynn the Pod Coordinator, for bestowing this wonderful award; I am so honored. Thank you so very much. I would also like to thank Tripod for providing us this space to place our information

Welcome to my Treadway Lineage. I have worked long and hard for over twenty years to acquire the information I have below thanks to; Grandpa Treadway's info, Courthouses, Libraries, Cemeteries and other contributing family members. Some of this information was given to me, and not all information has been verified. There are many people to thank for the information below, as this was not just a one man project - Thank you's to: Craig Treadway, Hubert "Hubie Treadway, Jared Treadway, Doris Woodington, Garnett Sprinkle, Randall Davis, Daniel Treadway, Jerry Freeman, Claudia Angel, and so many others, for without all of you this page would not be what it is today. If you find any discrepancies please email me. I was finally able to go to North Carolina and Maryland in August of 2000, and was thrilled to find much needed information and many corrections to the below families. This page is dedicated to my Grandfather; Hubert Harvey Treadway (1911 - 1977), and my Father; Benny George Treadway (1937 - 2011)

Note to all: The word "Tentative" will appear below many times. The descendants line from Thomas to William to William to Aaron has not been proven. Many courthouses were burned to the ground during the Civil War where the information badly needed probably was. The only way to prove our line is through DNA testing. Hopefully in time it will be, but for now this is how I "Tentatively" see it.

Please remember each bit of information found here, or elsewhere, must be researched and proven by weight of evidence, via you, the researcher.

Descendants of Thomas Tredway

*Thomas was born ca 1700, it is known where he hailed from; only that he arrived in Baltimore County ca 1718 per a deposition made by him in 1774, provided by Jared Tredway (Thanks Jared), Thomas stated the following: "He was 74 years of age, and that he knew Antil Deaver since coming to this county in 1718 (It is not clear if he meant Antil coming to the County or himself? The Deavers were from Anne Arrundel Co., Maryland), when he was a boarder of Antil's. He also stated that he worked for John Webster in 1719." Thomas became a farmer, and an Inn holder, owning a large plantation and tracts of land on the upper Chesapeake Bay, near Joppa. His staple crop was tobacco. According to Dr. Alexander Hamilton, whom a book was written on, he states that Thomas was a large pursy man. Thomas was married four times and had 9 children.

Baltimore Co. Families Book, pg. 650, by Robert W. Barnes - 10 Jun 1757: William and Elizabeth Smith conveyed Thomas Treadway, innholder, 160? a. Turkey Hills and Strawberry Hills. On 04 May 1759, Thomas and wife Elizabeth (McComas) conveyed to John Goodwin 40 a. White Oak Bottom and 70 a. Strawberry Hills. Also from the same book, pg: 650: On 25 April 1769, Thomas and wife Mary (Gittings) conveyed 50 a. Turkey Hills and Strawberry Hills to Joseph Stiles

Baltimore Co., Maryland Deeds JLG-0-31, Dated 1798 (Deed was not recorded properly on 25 April 1769) - From Jared Treadway:  Thomas purchased a tract of land called "Come by Chance" from James Osborn for £600 near Joseph Giles house containing 50 acres called Strawberry Hills. Strawberry Hills.

Thomas married first to Ann _____ (possibly Deaver), ca 1724 in Maryland. Ann witnessed the Will of John Deaver on 03 Jan 1731 in Baltimore Co., Maryland. She also appeared on 18 Mar 1731 before Thomas Sheredine, Dep. Commissioner and swore an oath that she was a witness to the said Will. Could it be possible that Ann was a Deaver? Ann probably died not too long after the birth of he last child John as I could not find any other records of her, and then we see Thomas marrying again in December of that same year. Ann probably died not too long after the birth of her last child John as I could not find any other records of her, and then we see Thomas marrying again in December of that same year. Seely Foley believes that Ann was Ann Deaver, daughter of Richard Deaver and Mary Ruff; which is how Thomas acquired Deaver land for his Inn in 1752. Richard was the son of John Deaver and Hannah Bell. Also, although the names were common for that era, Richard and Mary and his second wife Mary Shierbott did have children among others with the names of Daniel, Thomas, Mary, and John. Granted this is circumstantial, but at least it is feasible. Richard left a Will dated 1746 in which he leaves his entire Estate to his wife Mary, no children mentioned. Thomas and his daughter Mary (Tredway) Cunningham witnessed the Will of Mary (Shierbott) Deaver; John's wife in 1749. Please note that some family members went by Tredway and others Treadway. I will attempt to use the correct spelling.

1. Daniel Tredway, born: 22 Nov 1724, died: 25 May 1810, married Sarah Norris of Harford Co., Maryland on 02 Aug 1744 in the Spesutiae Church, Upper Node Forrest, Baltimore Co., Maryland, now the Bethel Church, in Harford Co., Maryland. Sarah was born on 15 Jan 1727, the daughter of Edward Norris and Hannah Scott. Edward Norris mentions his daughter Sarah Treadway in his Will dated 05 December 1761, Baltimore Co., Maryland. Sarah Treadway was also the Executor to her fathers Will (Wife of Daniel Treadway). Daniel and Sarah had 10 children. They all were born on their homestead in the Upper Node Forrest. Daniel and Sarah are both buried on their homestead. Their children were:

     a. Thomas Tredway, born ca 1745, Upper Node Forest, Harford Co., MD. He married Christina Saunders. Christina was born 27 May 1752, MD, the daughter of Edward and Christina Sauders.      b. Daniel Tredway, born ca 1748, Upper Node Forrest, Harford Co., MD. He married Hannah Magness. According to William T. Tredway's book; "The History of the Tredway Family", Daniel migrated with his family to Kentucky, and then migrated to Philadelphia where he died. Hannah was said to have died in Kentucky where her children were located. Children: Robert Tredway. However, there was a Daniel Tredway that migrated to Ohio where he was listed in the 1808, and 1810 Island Twp., Jefferson Co., Ohio, and may possibly be the Daniel Tredway listed in the Richland Co., OH census and died there in 1821. If Daniel continued with his Quaker faith, the move to Ohio would be one of the Quaker migration patterns, and may possibly be this Daniel born ca 1748.

     c. Susan Tredway born: ca 1750 Upper Node Forrest, Harford Co., MD. She married twice. She married first to William Hughes, and secondly to George Ranston.

     d. Edward Tredway born ca 1749 Upper Node Forrest, Harford Co., MD. He married Nancy Magness, born 1764. Edward died in April of 1833 and Nancy died on 18 May 1849, both in Harford Co., Maryland. Children: Henry, James, William Harvey, Sarah, Nancy, John E., Thomas G., Carvil, and Mary Amelia Tredway

Elizabeth was born 02 Feb 1777 in Harford Co., MD to James Peteet and Elizabeth Crabtree. Elizabeth died on 11 Oct 1865, both in Coshocton Co., Ohio. They both are buried in the Blooming Grove Cemetery, Randle, Coshocton Co., OH. Children: John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Hannah, Mary, Corbin, and Sarah E. Tredway.

John was a soldier in the war of 1812, under the command of Captain Joshua M. Amoss, 42nd Regiment of the Maryland State Militia. John died 02 Feb 1853 in Harford Co., MD. Children: Chenoweth, Thomas Peteet, Daniel N., Sarah, Ruth, and John Norris Tredway.

2. Mary Tredway, born 08 Nov 1726 in Baltimore Co., Maryland, married Clothworthy Cunningham (Thanks Jared). Clothworthy was born ca 1720. She was listed in Richard and Jane Tredway's son Thomas Tredway's Will dated 21 Jul 1749 in Baltimore Co., Maryland. Mary witnessed the Will of Mary Debaver on 29 Jul, 1749 along with her father Thomas and step mother Elizabeth. Mary was also mentioned in her brother John's Will dated 1767. Mary was also left a "stript potting gound (gown)" in Mary Lee Tredway's (her step mother) Will dated 1779. Clothworthy died on 29 Aug 1780 in Harford Co., Maryland. Mary was listed as the administratrix to her husbands estate. Mary, however, was not listed in her fathers Will, possibly due to the matters caused by her husband Clothworthy's estate. Mary and Clothworthy's children were listed in Mary's fathers will. Their children were:

     a. George Cory Cunningham, born 1749, Harford Co., MD. He married Sarah Carroll on 04 Aug 1779, Baltimore Co., MD.

John Tredway Will (The Treadway Web)

Thomas married second to Mary Ball/Bull on 27 Dec 1734/35 in Baltimore Co., Maryland. Mary was born 13 Jan 1707/08, and died sometime after 1741. I have no further information on Mary. Their children were:

5. Crispen Tredway, born: 19 June 1736, died young (Not mentioned in brother John's Will).

6. * William Tredway, (See 2nd Generation), born: 23 Oct 1738.

7. Martin Tredway, born: 07 Oct 1741, died young (Not mentioned in brother John's Will).

Thomas married for the third time to Elizabeth McComas ca 1743 in Maryland. Elizabeth was born 04 Nov 1718 in Baltimore Co., Maryland to William McComas and Hannah Scott. William McComas mentions his daughter Elizabeth Tredway in his Will, dated 01 Sep 1747, Baltimore Co., Maryland, leaving her a slave named Phylis. Thomas and Elizabeth witnessed the Will of Mary Deaver on 29 Jul, 1749, along with his daughter Mary Cunningham. Elizabeth died sometime after 1759.  Their children were:

8. Aaron Tredway, born 02 Nov 1744 in Baltimore Co., Maryland, migrated to Virginia, then to North Carolina, and settled in Kentucky. He married Eleanor "Nelly" Bounds, the daughter of Jesse A. and Nancy Ann "Ann" (Bird?) Bounds. Nelly was probably born in Virginia or North Carolina (the boarders were in continuous flux back then) and her father moved between those places. Aaron was listed in a Pittsylvania Co., Virginia deed record. On 04 December 1769 Aaron was shown owning 221 acres of land located on the Pigg River, Virginia. It has been said that Aaron had all girls, however, the 1790 Burke Co., North Carolina census lists four males in his household; 2 over 16 years of age (1 being Aaron himself), and 2 males under 16 years of age, and 5 females (one being "Nelly"). Aaron purchased land on the Big Ivy River in Buncombe Co., North Carolina on 19 Jul 1794, and entered on 04 Nov 1778. Nelly was left $150.00 in her father's Will (dated in 1804, Knox Co., Tennessee). There were a couple of unmatched Tredway males that "may possibly" have been Aaron and Eleanor's children; again, "possible". They are listed below as "Tentative". Aaron was listed next in the 1810 Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky Census with 1 male 45 +, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 16-25. Aaron may have died sometime after that Census and before the 1820 Census, possibly in either Christian Co., Kentucky or Gallatin Co., Illinois as he was listed in the 1810 Territorial and Gallatin Co., Illinois records, claiming infirmities. So he and Nelly may have migrated and died there. Aaron's Will was made in 1814. Aaron and Nelly's children were (Note it is not certain of the order of the daughters, just an estimate):

     a. John Tredway (Tentative), born ____ - 1774 (Per 1790 Census).

     b. Robert Tredway (Tentative), born 1774-1790. He married Mary "Polly" Hardin. Mary was born on 25 Dec 1789 in Ashe Co., NC. Robert died before the 1820 Ashe Co., NC Census as Polly was listed with her children. She married secondly to David Brooks. Polly died 27 Jul 1874, Ashe Co., NC. Children: William Hardin, Margaret, Cynthia, Sarah "Sally", John, Andrew C., and George Treadway.

     c. Nancy Tredway, , born ____ - 1790 (Per 1790 Census). She married James Morris on 25 Dec 1806, Christian Co., KY.

     d. Christopher "Christy" Tredway (Tentative), born 1781-1790 in Virginia or North Carolina. He married_____ Polly. Polly was born 1791-1800 in Virginia or North Carolina. Lived in Ashe Co., North Carolina. They had one son: Name unknown.

     e. Eleanor Tredway, born 1785-1794 (Per 1810 Census) 03 Mar 1791. She married Hardy W. Smith on 30 Apr 1811. Eleanor died on 14 Dec 1865, Trigg Co., KY. Children: Irvin W., Firman A., Hardy W., and John H Smith.

     h. Melinda Tredway, born 1800-1810 (Per 1810 Census).

     g. Sarah Tredway, born 11 April 1785 in VA She married Thomas Cobb, Jr. on 12 Oct 1809 in Prince Edward Co., VA. Thomas was born on 20 November 1789. Sarah died on 30 June 1832. After her death Thomas married Eliza Goodwin. Thomas died on 11 March 1843. Children: Moses Tredway, Nancy, Thomas Hopkins, Sarah, Abbott, Amanda, and Mary Susan Cobb.

     h. Mary Tredway, born 25 Oct 1793, VA.

Thomas married for the fourth time to widow Mary (Lee) Lynch Gittings on 26 Jan 1761 in Long Green Valley, Baltimore Co., Maryland. Mary was the daughter of James Lee and Margaret Wilson, widow of John Wilson. Mary was married first to James Lynch. She married second to Thomas Gittings. She died 11 Dec 1782, and is buried in the Gittings family plot in the Long Green Valley Cemetery, Baltimore Co., Maryland. Thomas Treadway and Mary had no issue together, but Mary had children by her first and second husbands.

Will of Mary Lee Lynch Gittings Tredway (The Treadway Web)

Thomas outlived all four of his wives. He died at the age of 86 years in 1786, at the home of his son Daniel Tredway. He is buried on that homestead in Madonna, Harford Co., Maryland. From Jared Treadway: Daniel was the heir at law of his father Thomas. He sold the 10 acre tract of land called Strawberry Hills and Turkey Hills for 5 shillings to Herman Stump. The land is described as that being near land condemned for a mill by the name of the Old Mill, and which stands on James Run on the north side of the post road bordering land owned by John Bull called Bull's Lot, together with all houses, outhouses, stables, coach houses, improvements and advantages.

There was also a Thomas Tredway living in Baltimore Co., Maryland, who left a will dated 21 July 1749-02 Aug 1749, in which he named his cousin Thomas Brown, friend Thomas Tredway, and Mary Cunningham as his administrators. This Thomas Tredway was the son of Richard Treadway and Miss Jane (Parker)...

Evidence does seem to point to the following information, however, nothing is proven so please do not state this as fact. If you use this in your research, please make sure to document this as tentative). It is possible that this William married Winifred Holcombe. Winifred was born between 1775-1784 according to the census records. She was daughter of John and Mary Holcombe. Their family was listed in the 1790 Burke Co., North Carolina Census with 1 male under 16, 1 male over 16, and 4 females. William was a Justice of the Peace in 1793 for Morristown (Asheville), North Carolina. Their family was listed in the 1800 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census records with 1 male 16-25, 2 females under 10, and 1 female 16-25. William purchased an unspecified amount of land on 26 Jan 1801 from Christopher Vickery of Pendleton Co., South Carolina located on the branch of Ivy, beginning on Vickery's line, and below Ritchey's Improvement. On 14 January 1804 William purchased 90 acres of land from John Holcombe on Gabriel's Creek in Buncombe Co., North Carolina. Then on 15 July 1805, he purchased another 110 1/2 acres of land from John Holcombe in Buncombe Co., North Carolina.
