Angels All Around Us

The song playing is called "Angel" and was featured
in the movie
"City of Angels."
It's a wonderful movie that helped me do some
fine tuning of my many beliefs about
angels...things like considering the idea that angels
have a 'best friend angel' they talk with
each day to discuss their day...to celebrate their successes
or seek advise in their difficulties. Or the idea
that angels spend their free time in the
library, learning all they can from the people there as
they read and reflect. Or the idea that all of
God's angels gather every morning and every
evening to 'hear' the rise and setting
of the sun. Wow!! It just makes them all the more real in
my thoughts...and in my heart.

The song touches me deeply...if ever there was a special song
that tells of my thoughts and feelings during the
struggles of addiction and seeking recovery,
this would have to be the one.
So the words are included here...but if you haven't yet heard
the song (performed by Sarah Maclaughlin), please
take the time to listen to it. The midi playing can't do
justice to the beauty of Sarah's voice as she
puts the words into the song.

"Angel"

Spend all your time waiting for that second chance,
for the break that will make it okay.
There's always some reason to feel not good enough,
and it's hard at the end of the day.
I need some distraction or a beautiful release.
Memories seep from my veins.
Let me be empty and weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight.

In the arms of the angels,
far away from here,
from this dark, cold hotel room,
and the endlessness that you feel.
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie.
You're in the arms of the angels.
May you find some comfort here.

So tired of the straight line,
and everywhere you turn,
there's vultures and thieves at your back.
The storm keeps on twisting,
you keep on building the lies
that make up for all that you lack.
It don't make no difference,
escape one last time.
It's easier to believe
in this sweet madness,
oh this glorious sadness
that brings me to my knees.

In the arms of the angels,
far away from here,
from this dark, cold hotel room,
and the endlessness that you feel.
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie.
You're in the arms of the angels.
May you find some comfort here.

You're in the arms of the angels.
May you find some comfort here.

What Do Angels Look Like?

Like the little old lady who returned
your wallet yesterday.

Like the taxi driver who told you that your eyes
light up the world when you smile.

Like the small child who showed you
the wonder in simple things.

Like the poor man who offered to
share his lunch with you.

Like the rich man who showed you that it
really is all possible, if only you believe.

Like the stranger who just happened to come along
when you had lost your way.

Like the friend who touched your heart,
when you didn't think you had one to touch.

Angels come in all sizes and shapes,
all ages and skin types.

Some with freckles, some with dimples,
some with wrinkles, some without.

They come disguised as friends, enemies,
teachers, students, lovers and fools.

They don't take life too seriously,
they travel light.

They leave no forwarding address,
they ask nothing in return.

They wear sneakers with gossamer wings,
they get a deal on dry cleaning.

They are hard to find when your eyes are closed.
But they are everywhere you look,
when you choose to see.

Silently one by one, in the meadows of Heaven,
blossomed the lovely stars, the forget-me-nots of the
Angels.

~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1849

A Child's Angel

Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born. So one day he
asked God:

"They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow but how am I going
to live there being so small and helpless?"

God answered "Among the many angels, I chose one for you. She will
be waiting for you and will take care of you."

The child continued "But tell me, here in Heaven, I don't do anything
else but sing and smile, that's enough for me to be happy."

God patiently answered the child "Your angel will sing for you and
will also smile for you every day.
And you will feel your angel's love and be happy."

The child persisted "And how am I going to be able to understand when
people talk to me,
if I don't know the language that men talk?"

God smiled as He said "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful
and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care,
your angel will teach you how to speak."

The child looked sadly at God as he asked "And what am I going to do
when I want to talk to you?"

"Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to
pray" God answered softly.

The child shook as he asked "I've heard that on earth there are
bad men. Who will protect me?"

Once again, God replied with patience "Your angel will defend you
even if it means risking its life."

The child spoke barely above a whisper as he made his last remark.
"But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore."

And God smiled as He told the child "Your angel will always talk to
you about me and will teach you the way for you to
come back to me, even though I will always be next to you."

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth
could already be heard, and the child in a hurry asked softly:

"Oh God, if I am about to leave now, please tell me my angel's name."

And God replied "Your angel's name is of no importance.
You will call your angel Mom."

The Five Finger Prayer

Your thumb is nearest to you. So begin your prayers by praying
for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray
for our loved ones is, as C.S. Lewis once said, a "sweet duty."

The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who
teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers,
doctors, and ministers.
They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right
direction. Keep them in your prayers.

The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our
leaders. Pray for the president,
leaders in business and industry, and
administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public
opinion. They need God's guidance.

The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is fact
that this is our weakest finger,
as any piano teacher will testify. It
should remind us to pray for those who are weak,
in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night.
You cannot pray too much for them.

And lastly comes our little finger, the smallest finger of all.
Which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and
others. As the Bible says, "the least shall be the greatest
among you." Your pinky should remind you to pray for yourself.
By the time you have prayed for the other four groups,
your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will
be able to pray for yourself more effectively.
