35th Brigade (Virginia)
Effective Date: revised 10 December 1999
INSTRUCTION No. 2-1
WEAR OF THE DUTY UNIFORM
Purpose: This Instruction is issued to provide Brigade members guidance on the proper duty uniform for wear at US Service Command activities in Virginia.
1. Standard Duty Uniform: The Class B Uniform will be the standard Duty Uniform for meetings, conferences, training (wear is optional when attending training conducted by other agencies), and emergency operations in an Emergency Operations Center when other emergency response agencies are in uniform.
2. Uniform Components: The Class B Duty Uniform will consist of the following items:
a. black garrison cap (folding flat cap). For Officers and Warrant Officers bright metal insignia of rank is worn positioned with the front edge of the insignia 1 inch from the front crease and centered on the lower panel of the hat on the wearer's left side. Officer's and Warrant Officer's garrison caps will be trimmed with gold trim and enlisted personnel's with black trim. The cap will be worn centered on the head, with the front and rear creases and the top edge of the crown forming an unbroken line (not with the center crushed down or with peaks at the ends).
b. white shirt with epaulettes and patch pockets. Embroidered full color rank insignia will be worn on black shoulder marks, over the button down epaulettes of the shirt. The black plastic name tag will be worn centered on the wearer's right pocket flap. The front closure of the shirt will be arranged so that the shirt's edge forms a continuous straight line with the edge of the fly of the trousers and the outside edge of the belt buckle.
c. white vee neck undershirt for male personnel. Women's undergarments will be of a color that does not show through the shirt.
d. medium gray (Class B Gray)or black (Class B Black) trousers or skirt (for female personnel), with a black web belt with brass buckle and tip. The gray uniform is the primary duty uniform.
e. neutral hose and black shoes with a conservative heel for female personnel, and black socks and black laced low quarter shoes for male personnel. Shoes may be leather or have a synthetic surface and should have a plain toe. Shoes will be polished.
3. Wear of Ribbons and Badges:
a. The use of badges and ribbons will be limited to those absolutely necessary to identify service or skills relevent to disaster operations. Unless otherwise ordered ribbons will not be worn. The intent is to present an uncluttered appearance to members of other organizations that does not unduly emphasize prior military service.
b. Wear of badges should be restricted to one badge worn centered 1/4 inch above the wearer's left pocket seam. Individuals who have qualified for multiple badges may select the most appropriate badge for wear. Badges may be either full size or shirt size as determined by the regulations of the original awarding service. Badges which are normally worn on the pocket in the regulations of the awarding service will be worn according to that service's regulations. Badges worn will be permanently awarded badges; military temporary badges that indicate a special duty will not be worn.
c. No badge or ribbon may be worn that is of the same die or color pattern as a badge or ribbon awarded by the United States uniformed services unless earned through recognized federal service.
4. Wear in the Presence of Uniformed Services Personnel: Members of the uniformed services of the United States (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, and National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration), including their reserve components, are trained in the appropriate wear of the uniform. Our uniform may arouse interest because it is unfamiliar to military personnel. Improper or sloppy wear of our uniform guarantees that it and you will not be taken seriously.
