This is my 1956 Oval, chassis 1-1001241.

The 1,000,000th Beetle was built on (I believe) the 6th of August 1955. I think my car was built about a week or so after this date.

1955 Bug - it needs a bit of work ! This is the car a short while after I bought it. The wings (fenders) had already been removed and dumped as they had been flared by a previous owner by cutting into them and bending the metal out. The resulting mess was then covered in fibreglass and painted black. The doors and interior, as you can see, had also been removed. If you look carefully you can see that the wheels have been widened by cutting the rims and welding in 2 inch steel bands.
The body looks fairly solid - The usual bits need to be replaced; spare wheel well, front and rear 1/4 panel bottoms, lower door skins and rear valance, but apart from that she appears to be in pretty good nick. '55 from another angle.
Oval - interior view of the car, more or less as I bought it. This was the start of what turned out to be a very long restoration project. My big mistake was to buy a building plot and build a house. To say the least, this left my wallet a little light. No funds - no restoration !
This is the under-bonnet area as it was when I got her - not a pretty sight is it ?

At some point, someone has cut a hole in the top of the tank and fitted a plunger-type fuel guage. Unfortunately it only reaches about halfway down the tank and was, therefore, about as much use as a one-legged man in an arse kicking competition !

'55 view under the bonnet (hood) - what a bloody mess !.
