Determine which will be the primary attribute, according to the clan of the character. For example, the Brujah are not known for their mental attributes. However, they are very physical; the priority for the typical Brujah is 1) physical, 2) social, and 3) mental. A Ventrue on the other hand, may prioritize like this: 1) mental, 2) social, and 3) physical.
The categories you choose as your Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary will continue to have impact on your character even after character generation. As most people excel in particular areas, so too does your character excel in a particular category of traits. Your trait maximums due to generation are two higher in your Primary category, equal in your Secondary and two lower in your Tertiary category, than are listed in the table in Laws of the Night (p. 15).

The seven prime, five secondary and three tertiary attributes are free. There is a cost of one point per attribute for each attribute after that. Taking negative traits will allow the same number of points for the purchase of generation or to buy extra traits or disciplines.
