Founded by colonists from Eubea with the name of Pithecusa, Ischia has been the oldest Greek colony in the Western Mediterranean (8th Century B.C.), as proved by the archaeological finds of the necropolis in Lacco Ameno.

Ancient rock-dwellings, millstones and caves are the remains of a rural architecture which testify to a very old rustic culture, now in extinction.

The island has kept many of its religious rites and folklore of the fishermen and peasants: the original folk dance is the "N'drezzata" of Buonopane which has been handed down from father to son for centuries.

"Crates"

This has the greatest story to tell about the photograph... As I was taking the picture, an elderly Italian woman approached and pointed at the crates and at my camera. Her son translated for me asking why was I taking a picture of crates. Well, as you can see the result, the subject matter can be just about anything.

"Leaving Porto Ischia"

I was sitting at the inlet of Porto Ischia eating tangerines when the boats in the harbor started heading out to sea. From what I observed, they go out early in the morning, come back for lunch, then head out again.

"The Lighthouse"

Now as the boats leave the inlet, they pass this lighthouse. I was hoping to get some shots from the lighthouse, but there's a green gate with many spikes blocking the access.

"Preparing the Nets"

This was after lunch as the fishermen were preparing their afternoon run to sea. You can see how close the other boat is... It's like that throughout the harbor in Porto Ischia as in Casamicciola, Forio, San Angelo, and Ponte Ischia.

"Fishing from a Stump"

While some use boats, others simply stand by the shore, or even sit on a stump.
