STORY
BEHIND MAN’S FIRST STEPS ON THE MOON
.
When I was a youngster,
the US Space program was in full swing, and I faithfully followed every
launch. I was such a big fan, that at one point in high school I was dubbed
"Major Tom". This culminated with the embarrassing effect of having the
whole school stand up in the lunch room when I walked in one day, and begin
singing the David Bowie song which begins "Ground control to Major Tom…
well, you get the picture.
.
Anyway, when I was 14
the Apollo 11 landed on the moon and Neil Armstrong took his historic walk,
with me and several million other people staring transfixed at our TV screens.
Several months later I penned this tribute to the Apollo 11 and submitted
it as an English assignment and received an A grading on it. I kept it
all these years, and since it was truly my first poem, I included it in
my collection.
