STORY BEHIND A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT
.
I have no specific recollection of events I'm about to relate, because,
due to the concussion I suffered in this accident, everything from Thursday
night is gone.
.
Apparently one of our units broadcast they were following a stolen
car. I advised that I was moving across as a cover unit. It was raining
very heavily. As I came down the hill and around a curve, I apparently
lost control of the police unit and spun around several times. The spin
stopped when I hit a light pole on the drivers door. The police unit was
completely destroyed and airbag deployed. Now, they tell me the drivers
seat was completely sheared off and I was thrown into the back seat area.
.
My Sergeant says I came on the radio very calmly advising I was involved
in an accident and needed an ambulance. I then gave my location and then
they could not get me on the radio any further. The investigation team
figures I was not going terribly fast, somewhere between 60-80 kph. They
also figure that due to the rain I may have hydroplaned and lost control.
.
The first-aid attendant from a business on the street was first on
scene. He said that I couldn't reach the radio microphone on the dash and
apparently had the presence of mind to pull my portable radio out and use
that to broadcast.
.
As far as injuries go, I spent 4 hours unconscious. The accident happened
at 3 am and the first thing I remember was waking up at 7:30 in Emergency.
The first thing I saw when my vision cleared, was a nurse with THE most
gorgeous eyes I have ever seen. Wish I knew who she was, but, I can't remember.
I was all hooked up to monitors and IV's. Nothing too major. I ache all
over. I have a concussion. Have 2 scrapes on the back of my hand and a
sore finger (from air bag deploying), my chest is sore (also from air bag).
Both thighs have charlie horses although the left hurts more. My back and
neck are sore. No permanent damage and CAT scan of my head was negative.
I was discharged from hospital at 12:30 Friday afternoon and spent the
day lying around watching TV.
.
Try as I might, I can't remember anything about Thursday night after
about 10 pm. The Doctors said it is not unusual with a concussion or for
people involved in serious accidents to not remember. They say the memory
may come back, but it may not. My Sergeant has a tape of the incident and
I will get a copy. I also am going to order photos of the accident just
so I can see the car and add the pics to the web page here. They tell me
it is a complete write-off. It was a Chevy Caprice
(Bubble-car) and the guys hate those ones. Apparently they are all cheering
that I destroyed it.
.
Anyway, that's the story I was told. I am doing pretty good. The headache
is going away and don't feel too terribly bad. Could have been much worse
they tell me. So I'll just thank my lucky stars and one very special guardian
angel.
