The Great Fire of '98
.
The building was all filled with
smoke, no alarms were heard to ring,
Firemen ran back and forth, to
try and do their thing.
Searching through our hallways,
smoke they had in sight,
But they couldn't find a fire,
to pull out their hose and fight.
.
Call takers kept on taking calls,
from those on Nine-One-One,
Data Entry kept on entering, each
call as it was done.
Dispatchers kept dispatching,
units to their calls,
While fire guys crawled everywhere,
through rooms and bathroom stalls.
.
The smoke was getting thicker,
getting hard to see,
But everyone kept working, as
more rigs arrived code three.
Then after 30 minutes, the fire
it was found,
The evacuation started then, people
moving to safe ground.
.
A ventilation shaft they found,
the place that had the fire,
Threatening old Three Twelve Main,
to force it to retire.
Then they poured the water in,
the hoses were gigantic,
They used enough inside the shaft,
to re-float that old Titanic.
.
Our building is now back in use,
mere hours from the start,
The smoke smell lingers in the
air, the ceiling pulled apart.
Things are back to normal now,
the excitement has now passed,
The memory of this crazy day,
is one that's sure to last.
.
There's no truth to rumours, your
eyes just played a trick,
That was not a Detective, with
marshmallows on a stick.
For the ladies with the calendars,
of firemen undressed,
You got to see the boys in action,
and nearly at their best.
