STORY BEHIND THE POEM BOOM CAR
.
Steve Shaw and Darren Foster are normally partners on our squad, but they
are also training officers. They take
brand new recruits out of the academy and teach them the “practical” side
of police work. Their usual habit
during the last phase of training is to put their two recruits together to
work as partners and then they ride in the back seat and monitor their performance.
.
This is what they were up to on this fateful day.
Terri-Lynn George and Ryan Wray were in their final phase of “Block
2” training and were working together.
It was Terri-Lynn’s turn to drive.
They booked out their vehicle, stowed their gear, made
all their safety checks, all set to start out on their shift.
Everyone was in the car and buckled up, the computer signed on and
they were ready to go.
.
Terri-Lynn adjusted her mirrors and seat (really far forward as she is somewhat
vertically challenged). She looked
back over her shoulder and made sure all was clear and shifted the car into
gear. She looked back over her shoulder
to back out, just like they taught her at the academy.
Unfortunately, when she shifted the car into gear, she shifted into
Drive rather than Reverse. When she
gave it some gas, the car lurched forward into the three foot high concrete
abutment in front of her car. The
concrete divider was shifted out of place and the nice shiny bumper received
several large deep scratches.
.
As accidents go, it was pretty minor.
But, it was still funny enough to tease her about and as fate would have
it, I just happened to be walking into the parking lot to witness the aftermath.
Another recruit victimized in rhyme.
