BEHIND IMMIGRATION VS BUSTERS
.
The
other day one of the Federal Immigration officers was working with a couple
of officers from the Citywide Enforcement Team (CET). The
project was for the CET people to point out some of the illegal immigrant
drug dealers in the Downtown Eastside.
.
They
were pointing out some of the tricks that the dealers use to hide their drug
supplies. While they were up in their observation
post, the immigration car was parked outside. Unfortunately
it was illegally parked. A Bylaw enforcement officer
came along and ticketed and towed the immigration car. Now
to be fair, the car was completely unmarked and no indication it was a police
vehicle.
.
When
all the police members attended Buster’s which is the contract towing company
for the city, something unusual happened. Despite
numerous explanations about the car being a police car,
and showing of badges and identification, the guy at the counter refused
to give the car back. Among repeated prompting, pleading
and demands, they just were not getting the car back until it was paid for.
.
When
that was not forthcoming, the police members contacted the supervisor who
attended and attempted to persuade the guy to give the car back. Even this was unsuccessful. However,
luckily at this point, the owner of the tow company who had heard about the
problem, called on the phone. While the members could
not hear the other end of the conversation, suddenly the car was returned
and returned without payment.
