PHOTOGRAPHIC ENTRIES

Just to change the page slightly, I decided to show off some of my photographic images.  Some I took into Corel Photo Paint and performed some digital corrections and alterations.  Others I left as "straight" shots.  Enjoy the shots and feel free to comment in my guestbook.

TITLE:  "MAGICAL MUSHROOMS"

I found these mystical looking mushrooms on a walk in Central Park in Burnaby this October.  At first I thought they were plastic lawn ornaments, but when I moved in I saw they were real.  I had to get a picture of them and went and got my camera.  Here is the result.  This is a "straight" shot, no manipulation.  Has not been entered in competition.

TITLE:  "ORCA"

This is a shot I took of the Killer Whale at the Vancouver Public Aquarium. I digitally enhanced it to make the blue background brighter.  I then masked the whale, converted it to a black and white grayscale image and then airbrushed the black portions to make them true black.  The photo did not reach the medal round in regular competition with one judge, but won "Print of the Year" in the 80 Square division of Lions Gate Camera Club from a 5 judge panel.

TITLE:  "SEA GHOST"

This is a shot I took of a Beluga Whale at the Vancouver Public Aquarium.  I digitally darkened the water, masked the whale and lightened up the whale so that it stands out.  The print did not reach the medals in competition at the Lions Gate Camera Club.

TITLE:  "OCTOPUS"

This is a shot, also at the Vancouver Public Aquarium of an octopus in a glass case.  The problem with the original shot was a group of children on the other side of the case could be plainly seen.  I digitally removed them from the background and then blackened it.  The print has not been entered in competition as yet.

TITLE:  "THE COWBOY"

This is a shot of a lone cowboy that I took while on a trip to Fort Edmonton Park, in Edmonton Alberta Canada.  This is a straight shot, other than some cropping.  I did no digital alterations on this print. This was entered in competition and to date remains my only "gold medal" entry.

TITLE:  "EAGLE"

One day I was out in my backyard and setting up to take some photos of my house, when this majestic fellow came down and landed less than thirty feet away on the lawn.  I was shooting with a 135 mm lens and slowly turned and snapped 6 or 7 shots of this eagle.  It was originally shot on slide film.  I entered it in slide competition and won a bronze with this shot.

TITLE: "CRABBY"

I was on a night dive near Sunset Marina in British Columbia.  My partner picked this fellow up and I snapped a quick shot of him.  Despite his large appearing size, he is only about 3/4 of an inch.  It was shot with a macro lens and flash.  In the original shot there was a lot of debris floating in the water, so I took it into Corel Photo Paint and touched up the photo.  When entered in competition it won a bronze.

TITLE: "FLAMINGO TONGUE SNAIL"

This was shot on another night dive, only this time I was in Grand Cayman.  I saw this creature on the underside of some Fan Coral and snapped the shot.  When I showed the photo to my dive guide he was quite impressed and told me that the Flamingo Tongue Snail is quite a rare creature to see.  Club entry of the photo won another bronze.  There was no digital manipulation of this image.
