"Let's be brutally honest here. If you can do your own tour, it's your vision, your light, your sound. I think Sarah has done an amazing job. Sarah owns Lilith. So you're really doing Sarah's tour. Which is fantastic, especially for a lot of women who can't do their own tour, or don't want to. It's tough to keep 35 beings on the road and feed and clothe them, maintain the trucks and everything. It's an unbelievable responsibility. I happen to love that side of it. To be able to do your own tour is the most incredible thing. A lot of acts have had to cancel dates because they weren't selling enough tickets." -Tori when asked why she didn't do Lilith (Newsweek 7/27/98) "Well, I would have a good bottle of wine with Sarah any night of the week, but my shows are theatre, and I've worked a long time to get to this point. This isn't just about eating some chicken and hearing a few of your favorite female singers. You walk into my show, you walk into a world - it's a film every night. I can't impose that on Lilith and vice versa. Plus I'm not into the all-malle, all female thing. Where's the Dionysus? Where's Hades? You can't cut out the testosterone. And we need some pansy-ass people too, like little camp Hermes. Even though I'm sure some of those women have more testosterone than Hermes." -Tori on Lilith (Rolling Stone 6/25/98)
I went to Lilith Fair the 30th of July, and I loved it. I got to see some really cool artists on the second stage, and I was amazed at Natalie Merchant, and totally blown away by Sarah Mclachlan. I think Lilith Fair was a great idea, and Sarah Mclachlan should be very proud of herself for putting it all together. Here's my complaint. I'm getting really tired of walking into every music store, and seeing Tori pictures and cds mixed in with the Lilith Fair displays. I think it's more than obvious that Tori's not doing Lilith Fair. She's made it quite clear in many interviews that she didn't want to do it. Now, i don't mean that by doing Lilith Tori would be lower herself or anything like that. I just think that it is really annoying that now when people think female musician, they automatically think Lilith Fair. It's like, well you are a female musician, you belong on the Lilith tour. Also, you'd think that the people interviewing her would do some kind of research, and stop asking her why she's not doing the tour. It reminds me of the CNN Showbiz (or maybe it was World Beat) interview where he asked Tori is she was still the Cornflake Girl. There are lots of female artists not touring with Lilith Fair. I don't see why it's such a shock that Tori isn't either. What do you think? Tired of those Lilith Fair displays too? Email me and let me know.
