metamorphoo {met-am-or-fo'-o}
from 3326 and 3445; TDNT - 4:755,607; v
AV - transfigure 2, transform 1, change 1; 4
1) to change into another form, to transform, to transfigure
1a) Christ appearance was changed and was resplendent with divine
brightness on the mount of transfiguration
Matthew 17:2, Mark
9:2, Romans 12:2, 2
Corinthians 3:18
Matthew 17:2 And was transfigured <metamorphoo> before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
Mark 9:2 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured <metamorphoo> before them.
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed <metamorphoo> by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. This particular Greek word is used to refer to the transfiguration and also to the change that is going to take place in all Christians. In other places, there is a reference to the adoption as sons. This is often mistakenly connected with adoptions as it is known in the USA. In fact, the Eastern practice of adoption is the barmitzvah or placing of a mature son. The Bible calls it the redemption of our bodies.
2
Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding
as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed <metamorphoo>
into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
Adoption as mentioned in the Bible is the Eastern form of adoption, not the Western form as it is often misrepresented to be.
The Greek is huiothesia {hwee-oth-es-ee'-ah} meaning the placing of mature sons.
Reading the following verses will make it clear that this adoption does not refer to being born again. It is another event that we look forward to--as does the entire creation.
Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption <meaning the placing of mature sons>, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Romans 8:21-23
Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of
corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
:22
For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together
until now.
:23 And
not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit,
even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption <meaning
the placing of mature sons>,
to wit, the
redemption of our body.
Romans 9:4 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption <meaning the placing of mature sons>, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
Galatians 4:5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons <meaning the placing of mature sons>.
Ephesians 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children <meaning the placing of mature sons> by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Abba is a word reserved for only a true father. It would never be applied to a father by adoption. We cannot be adopted into the family of God as orphans, but rather we must be born into the family. The adoption is quite another process--it is the process of being placed as a mature son to rule.
