The resort prides itself on "a sensual ambience of pleasure and unparalleled personal service." Suites offer wood-burning fireplaces and telescopes (for stargazing or watching the seaside topless beauties). There's a championship golf course, sport fishing, a complete range of water sports, horseback riding, desert Jeep outings and a world-class spa. From MTV News.
Ricky Martin, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, and Gloria Estefan are among the artists joining opera singer Luciano Pavarotti for his annual benefit for the non-profit organization Warchild.
Boyzone, B.B. King, and Joe Cocker will also participate in this year's "Pavarotti & Friends" lineup, which was announced Wednesday morning in Milan. The concert will take place on June 1 in Modena, Italy.
Past Friends of Pavarotti include the Spice Girls, Elton John, U2, and Eric Clapton, who have all turned out to help support the Warchild cause.
Established in 1994 to help the children of Bosnia, Warchild now focuses on helping young people around the world who are affected by conflict and violence. This year's benefit concert is expected to raise $1 million for the refugees of Kosovo plus additional funds for the children of Guatemala.
Martin, whose single "Livin' La Vida Loca" is currently at number one on the "Billboard" singles chart, agreed to take part in this year's benefit after performing at the 1998 Grammy Awards. A very enthusiastic Pavarotti approached the Latin superstar personally.
Other "Pavarotti & Friends" acts will be announced at a later date. We'll keep you posted.

SINATRA, STREISAND TOP US CENTURY'S SINGERS POLLS
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand were named the century's best male and female singers in a new U.S. poll released Thursday but some great voices couldn't break into the top 10. The Reuters/Zogby poll of 916 Americans saw such 20th Century superstars as Al Jolson, Billie Holiday, Placido Domingo, Maria Callas, John Lennon, Sarah Vaughn, Mick Jagger, Tony Bennett and Edith Piaf were left out of the top 10, beaten by the likes of Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Loretta Lynn, Mariah Carey and Luther Vandross.
"The results seems to be a matter of memory. We asked people to name the century's best male and female singers and for some their memories didn't extend back more than a decade or a year," said poll taker John Zogby. Zogby, best known for his political polls, said he was dumbfounded at the results.
On the male side, Sinatra topped the poll with 21.2 percent, followed by Elvis Presley with 8.7 percent, Garth Brooks at 5.7 percent, Luciano Pavarotti at 3.6 percent. Elton John and Bing Crosby tied for fifth and sixth place with 3.1 percent each. Behind Crosby and John in seventh place was country singer George Strait with2.4 percent and edging out seminal jazz-pop vocalist Nat King Cole in eighth place with 2.3 percent. Cole was followed by Perry Como in ninth with 1.8 percent and Luther Vandross in 10th with 1.7 percent.
"Funny Girl" Streisand was first among the century's top female singers with 14 percent, followed by Celine Dion in second with 8.6 percent,Whitney Houston in third with 7.5 percent, Reba McEntire in fourth with 4.5 percent, Dolly Parton in fifth with 3.5 percent and Shania Twain in sixth with 3.2 percent. In seventh was the great jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald with 2.8 percent, the ``Queen of Soul'' Aretha Franklin was tied for eighth with MARIAH CAREY with 2.5 percent each and in 10th place was country singer Loretta Lynn with 2.4 percent. "Maria Callas and Edith Piaf were way below the top 10 and only one of the Three Tenors -- Pavarotti -- made the cut for one of the top spots," Zogby said.
"But the poll shows that Celine Dion is hotter than hot right now and that the public still loves her song 'My Heart Will Go On" he added.
Part of the reason why Sinatra and Streisand did so well in the poll was longevity. Sinatra made his first recording in 1939 and continued recording almost until his death last year, being responsible for such classics as "My Way" and "Strangers in the Night." Streisand is the only performer to have a No. 1 album in the 1960s, 70s, 80s and the 90s. Zogby said the poll, conducted between April 5 and 7, placed no particular weight on a single age group. All respondents were 18 years of age and older.

TWO DIVAS 'BELIEVE' IN BABYFACE VERSION
By Ann Oldenburg of USA Today.
Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey said Tuesday they'll sing the Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds version of WHEN YOU BELIEVE at the Oscars.
![]() |
That's the latest twist in a controversy brewing since the orginal version of the song, by Stephen Schwartz, sung during the Prince of Egypt by Michelle Pfeiffer and Sally Dworsky, received an Oscar nomination. Edmonds' version, with about 15% more music, is sung by Houston and Carey over the end credits of the film and became a hit single.
Schwartz did not allow Edmonds' name to be included on the Academy Awards application. Rules allow only one version of a song to be nominated.
"It wasn't that I was angry; I was just hurt," Edmonds told USA TODAY Tuesday. He added: "It's my problem. I just hope that the academy will now look at changing the rules."
An Oscars rep said producer Gil Cates asked Houston and Carey to sing March 21 because he wanted the performers who made the song a hit. In a statement, the singers said:"We are disappointed that ..... Kenny has been hurt in the process. Despite his personal disagreement, he has given us his blessing for us to perform. Kenny did not want to cause any disruption .... by preventing us from singing the song. He is an innocent party in all of this."
Schwartz could not be reached for comment.
