Bubblegum Crash!:
Illegal Army

Episode Review and Comments

Bubblegum Crash!: Illegal ArmyAs the episode opens, two Boomers are guarding the entrance to the Glory Bank, one of Mega Tokyo's major area banks. Two of the employees at the bank, Mike and Ellie, leave for the day, making conversation with one of the guardian Boomers, named Boregard. He waves them off and then sees with dissatisfaction that a cleanup truck has pulled directly into a no-parking zone. Boregard makes his to the truck and informs the operator that he is not in a valid parking place. When he receives no reply, Boregard begins a countdown before he will call the police. Before he has even finished the countdown, a beam cannon fires through the truck, hitting Boregard and another Boomer and destroying both. From the truck emerge several large battlesuits, all of which head directly into the bank and destroy the guard Boomers therein. One of the Boomers, badly damaged, reports the incident to the AD. Police before he loses power.

The AD. Police are instantly dispatched to the crime scene. At the scene, the robbers are breaking into the vaults and taking out gold bullion, among other things. Finished, they go back to their truck. The AD. Police have surrounded the vehicle and the unit, led by Leon McNichol with Daley Wong, demand that the robbers retreat. When they receive no respone, Leon begins his own countdown. Instead of surrendering, the truck does a head-on charge toward the AD. Police. On Leon's command the troups start firing their guns but are unable to cause any significant damage to the truck. The armored suits inside the truck burst out and connect with a non-AD. Police helicoptor. Daley makes the observation that the robbers are obviously not mere amateurs.

After the event, Leon and Daley go to their superior officer, the new chief, to demand heavier equipment so that the next time an attack such as the armor bank robbery occurs, they will be prepared. The chief insists that as AD. Police it is their job to handle such crimes without use of heavy equipment--their training alone should be substantial. The chief makes no effort to help Leon or Daley, being intent to sit in his office and watch as his officers go out and fight. Having lost the battle with their chief, Leon and Daley go to Piss restaurant to eat. There they discuss the recent problems with the chief. As their conversation goes on, Leon is given coffee grounds in his cup and, incognizant, attempts to drink his beverage, spitting it out when he discovers it was nothing more than the grounds. The owner of the restaurant apologizes profusely and takes the Boomer waitress who is responsible away to get a cleanup started. Daley observers that recently he had a similar problem where there was a spoon in his hotdog. They both see that the Boomers 'have no more brains than orangutans.' As they leave the restaurant, Daley jokingly suggests that they call the Knight Sabers. Both wonder for a moment where the four women have disappeared to.

Priss and her sleezy managerThat same night, Priss is inside a recording studio, about to get her big break with her music. She sings the song Catch Me for several executives who leave before she has even finished the song. Priss is phazed only for a moment before her money/Priss-hungry manager appears and assures her that this is all perfectly normal, and not to worry at all. Her tells her that her big break is coming soon. Priss is so excited about the possibilities that she literally knocks her manager flat jumping for joy and running out the door as her calls, "Priss-chan!" Speeding down the freeway in her bike, Priss is overjoyed at the concept of becoming a big-time performer.

Linna is shown the next morning working as a stock broker. Due to some oh-so-slightly illegal tips she's been getting from Nene, Linna has been making a ton of money and jovially asks the stocks to continue to grow. She laughs maniacally and is stared at by what appear to be only male and no other female employees. Linna quiets herself, reminding herself that Omni, the company she has been giving all her earnings to, will keep growing. She is thankful that she no longer has to do sweaty aerobics for a living.

That same night, Nene, Linna, and Priss have met for dinner. Nene tells them that she is worried about Sylia's unexplained absence. When the other two pay her no heed, Nene yells at them and implies that all they think about is money. Linna is offended by this and calls Nene "Little Miss Cyberpunk" in retalliation. When Priss and Linna are no longer obsessing about their money in silence, they begin to talk about their personal successes. Linna tells Priss that she could double her money quickly if she were to give it all to Linna and trust her to put it in the right stocks. Priss is not thrilled with the idea and says it sounds horrible. Nene reminds them again that Sylia is missing and she finally gets their attention.

The three of them drive to LADYS633 which is undergoing severe remodeling. Sylia and Mackie are nowhere to be found, and the only thing to greet the group of an animated sign apologizing for the inconvenience. The three look at the empty building for another minute before leaving. When they are back in Linna's van, Nene asks what they plan on doing about it. Neither one knows what she's talking about, which annoys Nene. She explains the situation with the bank robbers, saying that AD. Police cannot be depended on. Linna replies that she does not like such brutal things as combat with Boomers and Priss is uninterested in fighting because she does not want to get hurt before her pro debut. Linna shows only minor interest in their time as the Knight Sabers, recalling it nostalgically. Discouraged, Nene wonders if the Knight Sabers have really disbanded.

It is that same night that the bank robbers perform another raid on a different bank. They use gases to knock the people inside unconcious and then move in, taking gold and a box containing a mysterious unit. Without any trouble at all, save for a few easily destroyed guardian Boomers, the robbers abandon the bank with their treasures.

D.J. Tommoy, a popular computer generated news ancor, reports the story as the AD. Policemen watch. According to D.J. Tommy, the AD. Police's reputation as being corrupt and unreliable may mean that the police force has outlived its day. Leon angrily turns the television off and yells at the officers for watching the news without so much as caring that they are being insulted. They do not care, however, because D.J. Tommy has his points. One of the officers states that you can't spend your own insurance money, which amuses Daley. Frustrated, Leon leaves to go 'burn off some steam' at a shooting range. Daley goes with him, knowing that Leon's state of mind may not be a good one at that point.

Nene RomanovaOnce at the range, Leon realizes that he can not get rid of his problems so easily. His aim is off and the boss at the range is sleeping with a game maker, as Daley says. More irritated than ever, Leon whips his gun around only to find it is pointed at Nene Romanova, who lets out a shriek. Because she knows the other two Knight Sabers are unwilling to help her, Nene has dug up dirt on the bank robbers and offers to help Daley and Leon with their own investigation. Their interest piqued, the two men go with Nene to see what she has learned about the shadowy organization responsible for the robberies. Nene gives them information on the Illegal Army, led by Colonel Lando, a veteran from the Polar War. Colonel Lando was leading a mercenary unit during the war while in the Phillipines. He and all his men were presumably killed, at least according to official records. Daley briefly admonishes Nene for hacking into government systems, which could cause and international incident. Nene smiles and laughs, telling them that there is more to the story than what officials records state. Both Daley and Leon know what that means: They'll have to bribe Nene for the rest. Leon offers Nene a coupon for three days of free desserts at Scirocco. She then goes on to tell them that there is evidence that the Illegal Army survived the attack in the Phillipines. The two men are not sure if there is anything that can be done about it, but Nene indignantly cries out that AD. Police is their last hope.

As Leon, Daley, and Nene discuss the robberies and the Illegal Army, the Illegal Army itself is doing upkeep on its weapons and battlesuits. Colonel Lando, who has a cybernetically engineered arm, along with several other cybernetic body parts, goes to a computer and tells the machine that he has achieved his goal of getting two of the components for a superior AI to any other known system. The computer replies that it is their mission, as the chosen ones, to find all of those components and bring them together to create a greater being. Lando salutes the mysterious computer but is told that salutes are not needed: They are now commrades, neither superior nor inferior to one another.

Later that night Nene is at the arcade playing a flight simulator game. She crashes and loses the game. Nene becomes mad and takes off the headset for the game, crying out that she can't do anything right, not even beat a worthless game. Just as she is about to leave, Sylia appears on the screen of the game and greets her, smiling. Startled, Nene grabs up the headset and asks Sylia where she has been. Sylia, apparently not at all worried, informs Nene that she has merely been at a hotel while she had LADYS633 renovated and remodeled. She asks how Priss and Linna have been. Nene beings to complain about the others when Sylia cuts her off and tells Nene to tell the others to meet her at her hotel for dinner that night. Before Nene can ask any questions, Sylia disappears and Nene is left wondering what Sylia could mean by asking all of the Knight Sabers together out of the blue.

Nene, Linna, and Priss at dinnerPar Sylia's request, the Knight Sabers gather at her hotel. Priss, Linna, and Nene are all certain that the Knight Sabers will officially disband that night. As Sylia appears and asks them why they haven't eaten. They all want her to tell them why they came together. Sylia wanted to wait until after dinner to talk things over in a leisurely fashion, but since they wanted to hear about it now, she was willing to tell them she she had to say. Before she could start, though, Nene nearly burst into tears and screamed that she liked the work they did as the Knight Sabers and did not want it to end. Linna and Priss try to comfort her as a startled Sylia looks on. Linna and Priss talk about how their big breaks have finally come and that they all knew the Knight Saber would have to break up eventually. They all wait for Sylia to make it official, but she laughs and asks if they really thought they were going to break up? This time the other three are startled and Sylia explains that they were going to start up again. She had a job offer from Zone Corporation to protect the last components for the second generation artificial intelligence and she has also upgraded the Hardsuits. In a steam room, Sylia reveals that the Illegal Army is still quite alive and that they have been stealing the AI components, contrary to the common belief that they had been taking only money. Nene is relieved to see that things are back to normal and says so only to be chastised by Linna once more. Sylia assures the others that they will be going back to work as the Knight Sabers as soon as the Illegal Army takes the bait she's set for them.

The Illegal Army soon attacks another bank under the cover of the night, stealing another AI component. This time they are met by the AD. Police. Lando observes that there is a 'hornet among the flies' as Leon steps forward to challenge him, donned in an augmented K-12AT. Lando accepts the challenge, telling his commrades to stay back and let him handle Leon. Leon and Lando battle for a moment during which Leon successfully flings Lando backward. As Lando begins to get up, Leon fires several small torpedos at him. Leon is proud of himself until Lando emerges from the smoke of the explosion and sends Leon flying to the ground, his face armor shattered. Lando moves forward to decapitate Leon but a war-time flashback of a young man who looked identical to Leon haunts Lando and he is too disoriented to kill Leon. Leon survives the sortie with several broken ribs and a concussion, among other problems. He thinks over the past battles with the Illegal Army and comes to the conclusion that they are stealing the components for the second generation AI. Daley thinks that it's still for the money--after all, the components can be converted into such on the black market or elsewhere--but Leon maintains that Lando has ulterior motives.

At that same time, Lando reports again to the mysterious voice in the computer. He lets him know that he has almost all of the components for the second generation AI. The voice congratulates him. Lando and his men then rest.

The next night Lando and his men prepare to rob the final bank and get the last component for the artificial intelligence. Sylia and the other Knight Sabers are also ready, though. Sylia shows them the newly reconstructed Hardsuits, complete with new softsuits for an entirely different feedback system. The women are excited and begin to climb into their new suits. The process is shown in detail, as the suits become formed precisely to the women who are wearing them. The new suits are heavier and bulkier for added protection and have new and improved weaponry. They also have one other new toy: The Knight Wing. It is a highly advanced jet that Sylia bought and 'toyed with' to create a powerful weapon. Sylia also has a hanger above the Silky Doll that opens up into the night, revealing the Knight Wing and Sylia as its pilot.

The Illegal Army breaks into the final bank and makes its way through the building to the last component, stealing gold as it goes. Lando opens up the vault through use of a laser only to see that the component is a dummy and that he and his 'army' have been set up. He tells them to go back but one of the others replies that the doors have all been sealed off. In desperation, Lando and his crew blow a hole in the roof to make their exit. There they are faced with three feminine figures who mock them and refer to them as cocky. Lando tells his men to attack, but Priss, Linna, and Nene are not so easily killed. They put to use their new weapons, including Priss' shoulder mounted needle guns, Linna's electrically charged spears, and Nene's computer systems which allow her to manipulate the very missiles fired by Lando's men. Three of the four men from the Illegal Army lose their suits and are shown to be nothing more than cheap Boomers that the three Knight Sabers take care of easily.

Knowing he is outnumbered, Lando breaks out an ultra-powerful gun. The Knight Sabers go to attack him again but he swats them away and shoots them down. As Lando starts to think his troubles are over, he hears a voice from behind him letting him know that he won't get away that easily. At that second a sword is thrust into his back by Sylia Stingray and Lando falls to the ground, his armor exploding around him. In a last ditch attempt to win, Lando grabs Priss by the throat and tries to choke her. Priss brings out a small dagger and slashes Lando's wrist. Linna moves forward and destroys Lando's leg and arm as he tries another attack on the Knight Sabers.

Knowing he cannot destroy them without sacrificing himself, Lando sets off a self-destruct mechanism that is embedded in him, telling the Knight Sabers that everyone in the city will be killed the instant the bomb goes off. Nene confirms this. Priss tells Nene to link to her so that she can get a good view of Lando in order to shoot directly through the self-destruct bomb. Lando claims that they will all die if they don't leave, but at the last minute Priss blasts through the bomb and stops it. Lando sees that he is defeated, but not without saying that no matter what the Knight Sabers do, "he" will eventually reign supreme. With that, Lando dies. In a show of respect, Priss closes his eyes for him and the Knight Sabers leave after imprinting their mark on the concrete. The AD. Police find the mark and Leon remarks that there may he hope left for Mega Tokyo after all.

Sylia at the grand opening of LADYS633The next day the Grand Opening of LADYS633 takes place. The remodeled store has animated, computer generated mannequinnes. Priss, Linna, and Nene sit at one table waiting for Sylia. Priss says that she has gotten an offer from another record company for a singing contract and Linna tells them that she has a new job, as she had quit her old one when the theft of the AI components sent the stock market straight to hell. Nene blurts out that she thought they were tired of money, but Linna says that was never true, calling her "Little Miss Cyberpunk" again. Sylia appears and asks what is going on. Nene complains about Priss and Linna, who are irritated with her. Sylia says that it does not matter what they do with their free time so long as they remember the Knight Sabers.
