Art Guyer at The Point On the Outer Banks POINT |
|
OUTER BANKS OF NORTH CAROLINA Welcome to The Point! This page comes to you from the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Outer Banks is a small strip of land that protects the North Carolina mainland and is made up of a very long, but narrow, peninsula and a number of small islands. This coastline is constantly changing as a results of storms and high winds. Much of it is resort area and National Seashore Park land. It is this area that hosted the Wright brothers when they made their first powered airplane flight. It also has many other historical and beautiful sites of interest, including a number of working lighthouses. The light at the right is the Hatteras Lighthouse. Over the years, the ocean has tried to reclaim the sand on which this light was built and the National Park Service moved the entire structure inland during the summer of 1999. Oddly enough, the last hurricane that came very close (Bonnie, 1998) added sand to the beach in front of the lighthouse due to the direction of the wind.
