One of my favorites from the 1960's were Creedence Clearwater Revival. They had their own sound for sure. Some critics called it Swamp Rock. I like that....haha!
Tom Fogerty formed a band called the Blue Velvets in the late 1950's, but they went nowhere. They finally got signed to Fantasy Records under the name The Golliwogs. This group was also a flop. When Tom's brother John Fogerty took over the job of writing and singing for the band, they exploded. We got to know them as Creedence Clearwater Revival. The line up included John Forgerty, Tom Forgerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford.
Their first album in 1968 included the hit Suzy Q. From then on the band cranked out one hit after another. Probably one of their biggest hits was Proud Mary. Anyone who plays in a band today has surely played this tune.
The band put out 7 albums. The last album Mardi Gras, did not include Tom Fogerty. He had quit the band the year before in 1971. It seems the other members, didn't like the way the band was being run by John Fogerty. They wanted more input into the music. This was to be the band's downfall. The group broke up in 1972. John Fogerty would fight Fantasy Records and the other members of the band for years to come.
Tom Fogerty died in 1990. Stu Cook and Doug Clifford have formed their
own band called Creedence Clearwater Revisited. I can't imagine Creedence
without John Fogerty! John Fogerty has resurfaced again doing concerts
and TV shows. He's still kicking out that good ole' swamp rock!
