Democratic principles are taken more seriously in the European Parliament than elsewhere, as it seems. The following questions by MP's serve to illustrate this. After the French government blocked the attempt by the parliamentary group of the Liberals to invite Taiwan's President Chen Shui-pien to come to the European Parliament to receive the "Prize of Freedom" from the Liberal International (see question by Graham Watson below), demands were voiced in the Parliament, asking the EU to grant visa to high-level government officials from Taiwan in the future to enter the EU, at least in their capacity as private persons. This has been at least inofficial practice in the US for some time.
