臺灣政黨 · Political Parties in Taiwan

  • 民進黨 DPP - Democratic Progressive Party *Chinese & *English
    Democratic Progressive Party
Ruling party with President Chen coming from DPP since early 2000, developed from democracy and independence movement (founded 1986). Being the ruling party, the DPP no longer openly advocates Taiwan's independence, but still follows a clear autonomous course regarding China.

  • 國民黨 KMT - Kuomintang ("National People's Party" or traditionally known as the "(Chinese) Nationalists") *Chinese & *English
    Kuomintang
Ruling party for decades under one-party-rule (from 1945 to 1987 under martial law, loss of power in 2000). Favours unification with China sometime in the future, however only under democratic conditions and economic convergence.

  • 親民黨 PFP - People's First Party *Chinese & *English
    People's First Party
One of the three major parties in Taiwan together with the two parties mentioned above. Split in 2000 from the KMT under former provincial governor James Soong. Position regarding China basically same as KMT.

  • 台灣團結聯盟 TSU - Taiwan Solidarity Union *Chinese
Split from the KMT in 2001, mainly supporters of former President Lee Teng-hui, who - being a native Taiwanese - followed an increasingly clear course of independence of Taiwan. The TSU was founded with the purpose of drawing Lee's supporters away from the KMT to support President Chen from the DPP. Position regarding China basically same as DPP.

  • 新黨 New Party *Chinese
    New Party
Splinter-party that split off the KMT in 1993. The only party that ardently favours unification with China and the only party that is prepared to accept China's concept of "One country - two systems".

  • 建國黨 TAIP - Taiwan Independence Party *Chinese
    Taiwan Independence Party
Splinter-party that split off the DPP, because the DPP's course for independence was not clear enough.

  • 台灣綠黨 GPT - Green Party, Taiwan *Chinese & *English
    Green Party
  • 勞動黨 Labour Party *Chinese & *English & *Français & *Russkij
    Labour Party
