William Emil had been shot and gassed in WWI.The gassing had caused him to have upper respiratory problems. He had moved about in the southwest for awhile, presumably to take advantage of the warmer and drier air.
William Emil left his family so that when Hazel died, the children were left orphaned. They were raised by their grandmother Burlingame and Uncle Harry and Ruth Burlingame.
