    = Sprayers and Pesticides =

As early as 1942 Canadian Oil Companies Ltd. promoted the sales of  hand operated , atomizing pesticide sprayers . Two versions were sold : the smallest one was "For White Rose Fly Spray" and had a fluted glass reservoir . The larger size was labeled "For White Rose Insecticide Spray", and came with a smooth   jar of
either clear or brown glass.

The Master line of White Rose Insecticides  included :
White Rose Livestock Spray              (1942) (which contains no D.D.T.)
White Rose D.D.T. Fly Spray           (1942)
White Rose D.D.T. Surface Spray  (1946)
White Rose D.D.T. Barn Spray     (1946)
       White Rose Brushkill         (after 1953)

White Rose D.D.T. Surface Spray
(introduced in 1946 , I believe)
A residual spray whose dry deposit on treated surfaces
kill insects which alight upon , or crawl over it.

The base of White Rose Livestock Spray is a highly refined product of definate viscosity limits  . Light enough for perfect application , it provides sufficient body to assure long-lasting efficiency as a repellent.
Field tests of the product have proved that cattle sprayed before the morning milking are satisfactorily protected throughout the day .
The killing and repelling ingredients used in the new White Rose Livestock Spray are derivatives of rare insecticidal bearing plants . These toxic agents kill by body contact with the insects through rapid suffocation and also causes leg paralysis upon immediate contact . Thus it is unnecessary to actually spray the insect for complete extermination . It might be well to add that while all the toxic agents bring sudden death to insects , they are absolutely harmless to man and warm-blooded animals .

The following is an article I found to be both interesting and informative.

(Borrowed with thanks  from the Summer 1943 issue of the White Rose News)

History records that is has not been long ago that people were helpless to plague and disease spread by insect carriers.  In fact, it has not been many years since natives of southeastern Europe found daying insects beneath a chrysanthemum-like flower, thus marking the discovery of one of the most widely used killing ingredients of today--pyrethrum.

Like rubber and many other inports, America's supply of pyrethrum is cut off for the duration.  Other essential ingredients of insecticide, such as derris products, etc., are not only curtailed by importation difficulties, but most of the supply on our own shores has been ear-marked for government use.  The only insecticidal products available this year will be those produced by manufacturers fortunate enough to have an ample carry-over of finished materials.

Canadian Oil Companies, Limited is among the fortunate few.  Limited quantites of both White Rose Livestock Spray and White Rose Fly Spray will be available to regular dealers this season.

In the matter of containers, which is a most difficult problem right now, dealers are being asked to accept what is procurable.  In Fly Spray, 8 oz. and 16 oz. tins are replaced with 20 oz. glass bottles.  In Livestock Spray the 128 oz. cans are now replaced with 160 oz. glass jars.  There may still remain at some sub-station warehouses a small supply of both products in metal containers.

For the benefit of those who may not be fully acquainted with the unusual quality of White Rose insecticiedes, the following facts are offered:

WHITE ROSE FLY SPRAY is an exculsive formula with a positive toxic action.  Therefore, for best results it should be thoroughly atomized in the area occupied by the insect.  For example, in destroying house-flies in a room, all windows and doors should be closed and the room filled with a fine mist produced by spraying White Rose Fly Spray upward.  Holding the gun in a downward position produces droplets and is not only ineffective, but wasteful.  The product is harmless to mankind and is perfumed with a pleasing odour.

WHITE ROSE LIVESTOCK SPRAY is, according to actual laboratory and field tests, the best product of its kind on today's market.  It is known as the triple-action destroyer.  First, it repels, keeping flies away from animals for unusually long periods.  Secondly, it paralyzes-a feature not common to all insecticides.  Insects coming in contact with the material are immediately stricken by leg paralysis causing them to drop to the ground and soon die.  The third action is the kill.  The contact-killing ingredient is extremely strong and consequently quick in its deadly action.  By thorough tests,  White Rose Livestock Spray far exceeds other popular products in kill percentage.
