Special Spring Lubricant
What can I say , other than this is a very rare
tin !
This months feature was a very specialized product
.
It is a one imperial quart of
White Rose
Special Spring Lubricant
for
FORD , MERCURY and LINCOLN ZEPHYR
SPRINGS
*
Compounded to meet the requirements of the
Ford Motor Co. of Canada
, Limited
Manufactured by
Canadian Oil Companies , Limited
BRANCHES THROUGHOUT CANADA
I believe this is a tin produced during the war
years. In the early 1940's paper labels
replaced the pretty lithographed containers we
associate with White Rose products.
This container has several unique
characteristics.
First , there is the
logo . Very early after Canadian Oil Companies Ltd. became truly
Canadian
again in 1939, a new logo was needed . White Rose had previously been a
brand of
gasoline. The 'rose' image was now the logo for and name of most
of the
companies
products . For a brief time the lettering was incorporated horizontally
under
the
image of the flower . While this version was common on
letterheads and invoices ,
I have
only seen one other example of this style used on a container.
Secondly , it
is made of tin , while briefly during wartime White Rose and En-ar-co
Motor Oils
were distributed in short and squat composite (cardboard-like) containers.
Thirdly , this
Canco tin has a soldered , resealable screw cap , pouring spout.
