This months Feature is a brass printers plate and its
original envelope .
The front of the envelope has been printed just as
the cheques.
Cheques from the era were quite large and this one
measures 4" X 9".
The most interesting feature to me is the name :
Canadian Oil Company ---- singular
, not plural.
That alone dates it between 1904 and 1908 . It was
printed for the
McCort Oil Co. branch , one of the original nine companies
that joined to
form the Canadian Oil Company in 1904. Even
the date is pre-printed 190_ .
The shine of the brass makes it difficult to capture a
nice image of the
printing plate but this will show that it is reverse
printed .
The following is a brief history of names and dates.
In 1901, in Petrolia, Ontario the Canadian
Oil Refining
Company was formed. Three years later, to
consolidate their strengths, it merged
with eight other small companies to form the Canadian Oil
Company
Limited of Petrolia. By 1907 this company was forced into bankruptcy and
was
purchased by the National Refining Company
of Cleveland. On December 4th, 1908, it received its
new charter as the
Canadian Oil Companies
Limited.
