Washrooms , Signs , and
Key Rings
Canadian Oil Companies Limited took great pride in
their public restrooms and issued many directives to station managers ,insisting
on cleanliness and comfort.
The earliest signs I have have are shown in
the upper portion of the photo on the left. They are printed on a composite
type board , with brass grommets in the corners. My first reaction
was that they weren't too old , but i have since been told masonite has
been arround since the twenties.My guess is that they were made during
the wartime metal shortages.
Below these are the " elongated wedge " style sign
made of porcelain after 1953. Also shown are the matching washroom key
rings. The "men" is metal , the "ladies
"is heavy plastic.The key ring on the right is plastic and purposely
made oversize to prevent customers accidentally walking away with it.
