A heart echocardiogram (echo) is an ultrasound of the heart. The test uses sound waves to form an image of the inside of the heart. Sometimes the cardiologist will do an echocardiogram with Doppler which means that the doctor uses color (on the monitor) to see how the blood is flowing (oxygenated versus unoxygenated blood in the heart) and if there is mixing of the blood indicating holes in the heart or leaky valves, etc. It is safe and painless and test results are available right away. It can be used before or after birth to look at the heart.
