Ok so your here, you want to create/enhance your webpage with free stuff?
Need a counter, guestbook, voting booth, E-Mail alias to use on your page?
You've come to the right place pal! On this page you will find numberous
counters, guestbooks and whatever else, and my evaluations on them. Why
am I doing this? Well, I wanted a free counter for my page, and
wasn't sure where to get one. I looked around, and found out it wasn't
all that easy to find free things. So I went through hundreds of search
results and thought to myself, what a waste of time for one counter. So
I decided to put up this page, to put that knowledge of where to get things
to use to help people build up their webpage. No, this page isn't just
counters. It's tons of stuff. Maybe I should just get to the stuff?
FREE WEBSPACE
Ok, so you want to get space to
put your Great and Almighty webpage huh? Well to tell you the truth webspace
was one of the easier things to find, however I do have a nifty list
here, and evaluations on some (I will get around to them all some day.)
www.Tripod.com
Tripod is one of my favorite webspace providers. You can find both my
guestbook, and message
base there. Also, here is a sample
page.
- Good points:
- Instant access
- You get 200k webspace
- They have a rather nice message base of their
own (called Trialogue)
- You get a free counter
- access to a CGI script that posts information
from a form onto the bottom of that page
- and they're pretty quick for being free It's
also got a friendly atmosphere, and plenty of member's are willing to help.
- Bad things:
- They require a "footnote" on the bottom
of your page. It basically says the space was from Tripod, and has an ad.
- I think, they only allow personal pages
www.Geocities.com
Geocities is one of the larger webspace providers around. I have a sample
page there.
- Geocities good points:
- Instant access
- They give you 2 megabytes
- a free counter
- Geocities bad points:
- I think everyone exagerates the slowness
of Geocities, however it is a bit slow
- They're atmosphere isn't nearly as friendly as
Tripod
- They require you to have a link (with an
image) that goes back to geocities homepage
- They only allow personal pages
- They're a nice place to have a page, if its too
big to go on tripod.
www.Angelfire.com
They seem to have done something to speed up their server.
- Good points:
- Instant access
- They give you a free counter
- They have a message board, not as nice as Trialogue
though
- Don't have an ad or link that goes on your page.
- They allow commercial pages
- Bad points:
- They only give you 35k
- Not as friendly as Tripod
www.Nether.net
Wow! I sent off E-Mail, and in a week I had a response. Pretty good! Ok,
to get on you have to telnet in (nether.net) and logon as newuser.
You log directly into a Linux box, so be prepared for Unix! If you
don't know Unix, theres lots of places that have the basic commands for
people, or an easier choice would be to pick a different free webspace
place.
- Good points:
- Instant access
- They give you 3 megs of space
- Since it's a Linux box, it might support things
like CGI scripts, and I'm checking this out very soon!
- Bad points:
- You have to know Unix
- Only bad point I'm aware of! I'll check out the
speed of their server maybe..
www.MainQuad.com
Mainquad seems to be mostly for college students, however they accept anyone.
- Good points:
- They give you 150k, plenty space for a text page
- Possibly more, I'm in the process of getting
an account
- Bad points:
- They give you 150k, not enough for a page with
a lot of graphics
- possibly more, I'll update this when I get an
account
- Possible backlog
CyQuest Webservices
Looks promising! Heres a sample
page.
- Good points:
- About 1 day to get an account
- They give you 1 meg of space
- Looked rather speedy!
- They also allow commercial pages
- Bad points:
- They require two paid advertisements on the top
of your page.
- You "share" an ftp account with a group
of people, if one wasn't trustworthy...
- Doesn't appear to have any CGI scripts for your
use
- Possibly more, they said they were backlogged,
and to check back in a day or two. I will
Hong Kong
Online's Cybercity I'm currently in process of getting an account (still
waiting....)
- Good points:
- They give you 5 megs of space!
- They let you have a CGI-BIN!
- You get more space if you refer people (5
megs is plenty for me tho!)
- Possibly more, will be updated
- Bad points:
- Application is done by E-Mail, they may be backlogged
- Appears to be slow
- I'll update this also
TTGCITN
Looks rather promising, currently getting an account
- Good points:
- 1 meg of space
- looks rather speedy
- I'll update this also, sigh so much stuff to
update
- Bad points:
- No ftp access? Or on special request or something?
- Backlogged
- Done by E-Mail, possible backlog
- possibly more.. nother thing to update
Fatty
Net Apparently its a Japanese student place, however they serve everyone.
I'm still waiting, might be backlogged.
- Good points:
- Well, I'll tell you when I get an account, they're
site isn't very informative
- Bad points:
- Backlogged
- Not very informative site
- I will update this one also. I know
I know, your getting tired of hearing that..
www.eccentrica.com
Hmm.. some nice features.
- Good points:
- They give you 1 meg of space
- They let you have your own chatroom
- They have a "slideshow" script, not
sure what this does
- possibly more, in process of getting account...
- Bad points:
- Hard to navigate site
- Currently, application is done through E-Mail,
possible backlog
www.TrailerPark.com
Hey wow what a site! What features!
- Good points:
- They give you 3 megs of space
- They allow subdirectories
- They have an E-Mail form script for you
- Free counter
- They have a random script (to randomly display
..stuff..)
- They have server side imagemaps
- They have a date/time script
- They have a script that tells you what browser
your using (if you didn't know..)
- They have a script that tells you what page you
came there from
- They have a script that displays your DNS host
- They have a script that tells people when the
page was last updated
- Bad points:
- They require an ad for them on top of your page
- They won't mirror sites (I'll have to make a
special page for them..)
www.Naz.com
What's there to say?
- Good points:
- They give you 2 megs of space.
- They appear to give you E-Mail of some sort
- Bad points:
- They put two banners on the top of all your pages
- No CGI scripts for you to use
www.toptown.com
They are for students!
- Good points:
- They give you 1 meg of space.
- They allow image maps (or so it seems)
- Bad points:
- They're for students only
www.spidercity.com
They allow both personal, and commercial webpages
- Good points:
- No ads or links to put on your page
- Bad points:
- Site isn't informative, doesn't tell you how
much space or what options you get
I think you can find a place to
put your webpage in there!
Free
HTML help
Ok, so you have that place to put
your webpage and kick off your boots. No actually that would probably mess
up your keyboard, just put your webpage there. So what do I do now?
Well I won't go into detail nearly as much in this section. Basically I'll
give you the links, and you can go look at them.
- NCSA's
beginner's guide to HTML This is probably
your best bet. NCSA has all sorts of guides to tables, frames, imagemaps,
and lots of other junk. This particular page is just basic HTML though.
- The
HTML learning pages A pretty nice page, goes over some
things like frames, tables, image maps, etc.
- Thomas
Rumley's chatroom: He does The HTML Learning pages, and says he'll
run a chatroom from 10 am to 11 am (United States, Michigan time) about
HTML help stuff. I would check it out, but school kinda conflicts
with that time, though he said he might move it.
- You have a site about HTML help? Or would you
volunteer your time and offer your expertise via E-Mail (if you can answer
questions about HTML that is..) Give me your page/E-Mail address and I'll
put you on this page.
Free
page counters
Ok, I claimed this was what started
it all didn't I? Let's see what I can do to help you.. No I won't have
webcounter on here as a free counter, no I won't have anything that outdated.
Isn't it obnoxious when you come accross a page and they say "Free
counters? look at webcounter"?
counters.fr.eu.org
Most of my counters I use are from them. No they don't have a lot of dfferent
styles, just 4, but they have some good options. You can put a counter
on a page as a 1 by 1 transparent image, so you can count people without
them seeing a counter, I use this on a couple of my pages. You can put
your counters on a different page with an option that will prevent that
page from incrementing your counters, I also use this also. I like
this place as if you couldn't tell.
www.webpost.net/guest.html
They give you a free guestbook and a free counter. It looks like its just
a guestbook unless you can see the java, anyhow you get all the info you
need for both of those.
Cyberhits
They give you a free counter, date, and clock. They have about a dozen styles
to choose from, I also like this place if you don't want a plain counter
(for the styles.)
Infoboard
They give you a free counter, and have 10 styles to choose from
DUX webcounters
They give you a free counter, and oh the styles! Just tons and tons. Trust
me, there is deffinetly over 300 (this is not exageration!), possibly more
than 400! However they do have a problem (can't be too good to be true)
every time the person viewing the page hits their back button to back to
the page (like if they went off a link, and hit back) it reloads the counter.
I haven't got a clue as to why, but lots of styles!
FreeAndFun
They give you a counter in exchange for a link.
PageCount
Pagecount gives you a counter, with a banner from one of their sponsers.
So they make money by putting a banner on your page with a counter on the
banner. However, they offer lots of stats on who visits your page, what
time of day, etc.
Webtracker
Ok you've all seen the thing
right? Well it keeps track of hits, stats (what browser, time of day, operating
system, domain (com, net, org, etc.) Very useful.
Be sure to check the Free
webspace area on this page, some of those servers give free counters.
Free
guestbooks
freegb.i-exposed.com
Whats there to say about a guestbook? uh, people can sign it, and leave
they're E-Mail address.. they're homepage address.. er I'll just go over
ones that have good features, and list the other ones k?
Webpost
gives you a free guestbook and counter
www.spin.de/YASGDB
They give you a free guestbook and counter also
www.tripod.com
They give access to a CGI script that takes information put into a form,
and posts it at the bottom of a page (basically a personalized guestbook)
You can only do this on page on they're server, but thats also free. So
hey, put your webpage wherever, and put a guestbook there. Thats what I
did
Be sure to check the Free
webspace area on this page, some of those servers give free guestbooks.
Free
E-Mail
Ahh, so how is E-Mail connected
to building a website? Well, believe it or not I can make up anything! So
heres my story, your putting up a page, and its on fish. You don't want
to use your Darkvader@notreal.email because you don't want people to think
are into fishing, not Starwars =). Ok, so heres the solution, you either
get another E-Mail box, or E-Mail forwarding, and put the mailto: link
to something else like Fishguy@notreal.email. See, told you I could
make up a story for anything.
They give you an online E-Mail box, You get on the internet from anywhere,
and can check your E-Mail from their site. They have miscellanious options,
and the page is pretty speedy for free.
They give you free E-Mail box, you check it over the www. at username@emails.com
- www.wwdg.com
I like them! You can bookmark your E-Mail page. You check your E-Mail over
the www.
They let you access your E-Mail over the www, or you can set it to forward
you E-Mail. You get a choice for the second part of the E-Mail address!
- E-Mail forwarding: basically you give people
a something@something.something E-Mail address, and E-Mail sent to that
E-Mail address will be forwarded to your normal E-Mail address. Very useful!
Also, most E-Mail forwarding places allow you to change the address they
forward to. So if you change your normal E-Mail address sometime, you can
change that and nobody will have to worry about sending E-Mail to a dead
E-Mail address.
They give you Free E-Mail forwarding, and you have several choices for
the second part of the email address, the red part here: something@something.something
- NetAddress.usa.net
Also gives you E-Mail forwarding, you don't have a choice for the second
part unfortunatly, its @usa.net always. They're slow, but you only need
to go there to change your settings, or sign up.
They give you free E-Mail forwarding, no choice for the second part of
the email address again. Its @bigfoot.com
- www.Geocities.com
Hey isn't geocities a free webspace place? You betcha, however they
give everyone who signs up for webspace free E-Mail forwarding, rather
plain. You get membername@geocities.com.
Fattynet appears to offer E-Mail something or other. They're page is not
very informative, but it does appear that they offer good services, I guess
the way to find out is to apply.
They give you free E-Mail forwarding to your-username@4insurance.com
- Four11.Iname.com
They give you free E-Mail forwarding, and have several choices for the
second part of the address.
They give you free E-Mail forwarding, homepage forwarding, E-Mail is at
username@post1.com
- www.starmail.com
They give you free E-Mail forwarding, and lots of choices for the second
part of the address.
- Be sure to check the Free
webspace part of this page, some of them give free E-Mail
Hit creating
for your website
Ahh that eternal question. Now that
I have my page up and running how do I get people to it? Well lets start
off with the basics.
www.Submit-It.com
registers your site with all the major search engines for free. You fill
out a form, and go to a submitting area where you just hit submit (and
occasionally pick something, like a catagory) a bunch of times. Its pretty
useful.
www.LinkExchange.com
The Internet Link Exchange is a free service. You put a banner on top of
any number of your pages, you submit a banner to them, and for every two
times the banner on top of your page is displayed, your banner is displayed
somewhere else once. I use this service.
Signing your name on E-Mail; This can help bring
people to your site, especially if your in any newsgroups or mailing lists.
Exchanging links with other sites: Basically
you ask another site if they'd be willing to put a link to you on their
page, if you put a link to them on yours
www.Webring.org
You join a webring, and put a ring graphic which allows people to navigate
the ring on your page. There are tons and tons of webrings (including 13
(I think, is it more?) on Sailor Moon) I run Ring
Of Confusion which is a general site ring. Basically no theme
www.TheRail.com
The Rail is basically a webring. It shuffles the order its in every day
however, which is kind of neat. And they also have different catagories.
Some places let surfers put a link to their page
in a special section, or in the guestbook. Look around, theres plenty of
these.
Anything else? who knows. I've probably
missed lots of stuff..
www.geocities.com
They have a "link exchange" of their own for member pages.
Other stuff
Yeah I know, not very specific
area.. Its not meant to be! This is kind of like my clutter corner.
Maybe I should name it that? Nah for now Other stuff does just fine.
So this is where you'll find things that just don't fit elsewhere in the
page.
Voting
Booths You can put a nifty little voting booth (See one in action on
my index.htm page) for a variety
of reasons. Perhaps you want to see if people like your site. Or maybe
they could use it and vote on whether they want more graphics or extended
text. Whatever the reason this is a very useful service.
Check the Free Webspace
area, some places give you access to some nifty CGI scripts
Special
request
You want something for your page,
but its not here? You can just E-Mail me at Zem@DeathsDoor.com
and I'll find whatever it is, or who knows maybe I won't be able to
find it but I probably will, and E-Mail you either way. You could
also, tell me what you think through that address..
Want to sign my guestbook?
How did I find all this stuff? Mostly
with Altavista. Yep, you
know those long lists of pages that come up? I went through a
few dozen of those.
This is a page.
