Where were you born?

I was born in Palm Beach, which is near Miami. I'm an only child--well, I would've had two twin sisters, but they died at birth....it's really sad. They were younger than me by a year. I grew up in a really calm house, probably because I was an only child.

What did your mum and dad do?

My father was a computer technologist--if a computer was broken in any way he would put it back together. My mother was into computer telecommunications, which is like telephones and stuff like that, so both of them were heavily into computers. My parents separated when I was four years old, though.

What kind of kid would your parents say you were?

Probably that I was a chatterbox!! I would talk everybody's ear off--I always wanted some kind of attention. I used to run around the house waiting to be stopped!!

Were you lonely, being an only child?

Not really--I had my cat!! I used to mess with him all the time. I thought he liked me, but he really liked my mum!! One time he was running around in the back yard and I started making noises and he attacked me!! My mum was going to let me in the house, but then she said: "No, I'm going to make him pay for bothering this cat!!"

So you were a bit nasty to him?

All the time!! I remember he jumped on me and scratched my legs up, because I'd been bothering him. I'm sorry to tell you this, but we ended up getting rid of him. My mum taught me a lesson about that--don't go treating animals badly, or they'll come after you!!

What's your earliest memory?

I think it's Mother's Day when I was about eight. I was doing a talent show and I dedicated a song to my mum. It was the song that Bette Middler sang in Beaches, called Wind Beneath My Wings, which is a pretty emotional song. I sang it for her and she was crying and stuff. Aaw!!

And what about your first crush?

Miss Olney, my fourth grade teacher. She was gorgeous - unbelievably beautiful. Most of the guys in my class had a big crush on her. She was very sweet, though - very down to earth, and she used to give me a ride home after school if I didn't have one. She lived about a block away from me and we always used to see each other.

What did she think of you?

She'd probably think I was a good kid all round. A couple of times I didn't do my homework, and even though she didn't want to, she had to give me detention. I had to stay after school for about two hours and had to do things like empty the garbage. I really didn't want to do it, but since it meant staying behind with her for two hours, I didn't mind staying and watching her!!

Were there any other cool teachers?

I thought Miss Scott was nice--just because of her smile. She had the biggest mouth in the school. She was pretty, but not that pretty, but she had a huge smile.

Do you think she liked you, too?

Well, she'd say I used to goof off and would always flirt with the girls in the back of the classroom. She'd catch me doing that all the time--I was always talking to girls. It was an English class and she'd be like, "OK, Alex, you can recite line 14 of this Shakespeare sonnet!!" I couldn't do that so I had to stay behind after class!!

Do you think she'd remember you now?

Oh, yeah, because out of the whole year, I spent half of it staying back after class, and not many people were there after school. I really must have talked a lot to have that much detention!!
