The Backstreet Boys are just as serious about staying in shape as they are about their music, which includes such R&B inspired songs as We've Got It Goin' On and Anywhere For You from their forthcoming album. Just one look at this fab five from Florida - Nick Carter, A.J. McLean, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, and Kevin Richardson - and you can tell that these guys exercise every opportunity they have to exercise. "Kevin and me and Howie work out almost every day," 18-year-old A.J. tells BOP. Their stay-in-shape program also includes0 healthy meals, a daily dose of vitamin, consistent sleep and fewer visits to McDonald's that the guys would like. When it comes to keeping in shape, A.J. explains, "First we jog for about 2 miles, and then we just do reps. We do upper body for 2 days, then lower body for 2 days." When all is said and done, he adds, they will have worked on "calves, shoulders, thighs, everything." Though their regimen sounds somewhat grueling, it's easy - or easier, that is- when they're at home. "When I'm here in Orlando, keeping a normal schedule, I try to make it to the gym 4 or 5 days a week," Kevin says. "When you're on the road, it's so hard to make time for that." For 23-year-old Kevin, working in an almost-daily two-hour workout took a commitment that he wasn't quite able to honor when the Boys first went on the road. As a result, he ended up getting really sick. But for this month's trip to Germany, Kevin has promised to be better to his bod. "I am trying to take better care of myself on the road this time, " he vows. Though keeping up a regimen on the road can be rough, the Backstreet Boys are always focused on fitness. "We put in our little votes for a hotel that has a gym," A.J. attests, "because we do try to keep healthy. When you're on the road, you're so susceptible to getting sick." Yet the Boys have found that submitting a request doesn't always guarantee them results. "Sometimes it's not too successful," Howie, 22, tells BOP. "You know, sometimes they say they have a gym, but you get there and it's just like a little bicycle or something." Having learned their lesson, the guys now try to find a hotel with a real gym nearby if their place of stay doesn't guarantee the workout equipment their physiques depend upon. "If not," Howie continues, "at least I do mu pushups and cruncehes every night and every morning. I am good about that." The Boys also have a back-up back-up plan when it comes to working out. "If we can't lift weights," explains Brian, 21, "then I take my basketball with me on the road." He figures as long as he can break a sweat, he can stay in shape. Lucky for Brian, Nick is always up for a game of basketball. In fact, had he not joined the band, he probably would have joined the basketball team at school. 16-year-old Nick's stay-in-shape system is probably the most basic of the bunch. "I pretty much play basketball a lot with the guys," he says. Yet even on those days when the Backstreet Boys don't have access to either a gym or a basketball, they still manage to keep physically fit. "We are constantly on the move, Howie notes, reminding us that their frequent performances "are a pretty good workout. I think that keeps us going." Oh yeah - we'd say thes guys have it goin'on!
