Built in 1981, she is among the fastest tall ships. Her name means "gift of the children," and comes from the fact that she was paid for, in part, through donations from elementary school children!

Netherlands.
Built in 1989, she is operated by Het Zeilend Zeechip, a Dutch foundation that promotes the tradition of the Netherlands as a seagoing nation. It is one of the most technically advanced tall ships, having self-furling sails and air conditioning!
~ EYE OF THE WIND ~

under the Flag of the United Kingdom.
Built in 1911, she was originally named "Frederich." She sailed for more than a decade between Hamburg and South America. Then, for 45 years until 1969, she was used as a coastal freighter in the North and Baltic seas. In 1973 she was restored and has been used in several film and TV shows, including "Nova" and "White Squall," starring Jeff Bridges!

Sails under the Russian Flag.
Built in 1987, the Mir is considered the fastest sailing ship in the world. Her name means "Peace" in Russian, and coincidentally is also the name of the Russian space station!
~ PRIDE OF BALTIMORE II ~

under the American Flag.
Built in 1988, she is known as a most distinctive ship, with her steeply raked masts (17 degrees off vertical), sleek profile and yellow stripe. Her predecessor, the original Pride of Baltimore, was lost in a storm off Puerto Rico in 1986!

under the German Flag.
Built in 1952 as a tank logger for the East German Army, she was converted into a passenger vessel in the early 1990s, by the Learning to Live on Sailing Ships Society, with the help of a government program designed to combat unemployment!
~ SAGRES II ~
Sails
under the
Portuguese Flag.
Built in 1937, she was originally built as a training ship for the German Navy, and also served under the American and Brazilian flags before the Portuguese Navy bought her in 1962. Her figurehead is a carved likeness of Prince Henry the Navigator, a 15th century Portuguese explorer. She is easily distinguished by the red Portuguese cross on most of her square-rigged sails!
~ SPIRIT OF MASSACHUSETTS ~

under the American Flag.
Built in 1984, she is a replica of the 19th century Gloucester fishing schooner Fredonia, one of a class of vessels renowned for beauty and speed. She spends the winters in the Caribbean!
