Spring is here and even though some days are cloudy, many of the days ahead will be filled with sunshine streaming in through the windows ofour homes. So this week we present a simple craft for kids that will bring enjoyment for the sunny months ahead. Materials:

  • waxed paper
  • old crayons
  • cheese grater
  • dried pressed flowers
  • iron
  • paper towels
  • hole puncher
  • hole reinforcements (optional)
  • string or ribbon

(This will require some parental supervision depending upon the age of your children.)

Cut two large circles out of waxed paper. You can use a dinner plate as a guide. Using the cheese grater, shave the old crayons into little bits. Lay one circle of waxed paper on a paper towel. Scatter the bits of crayon over the waxed paper not quite to the edges. Arrange some pressed flowers on the crayon bits. Carefully place the other waxed paper circle on the top of that, and place another paper towel over it. Using a moderately warm iron, begin to press. Do not slide the iron over, just press down until you have pressed the entire circle. Check carefully to see if the crayon bits are melted and the edges of the waxed paper are sealed together. When done, allow the project to cool. Using a paper punch, make a hole about a half inch from one edge. (If desired, you may use paper reinforcements on the holes.) Tie a string or pretty ribbon through the hole, and suspend it in a sunny window.
