Membership > Retention

Group Climate Questionnaire - How To - Have everyone in the chapter fill out a survey which asks questions about how they feel in relation to the other members, and also how they feel about the other members. (2/22/99)

The Bridge - This is a program to avoid "cliques" in a chapter. Break the chapter up into a few groups (5-7 people to a group). Pick the kids for the group at random or purposely to get people to work together. The object of the program is to make a bridge out of newspapers so that a milk crate can fit under the bridge and can be supported by a brick.

Materials Needed: Newspapers (about a week's worth from your entire board), Duct Tape (a lot), a milk crate, a brick.

Notes: This program was done in the AZAA Tournament a few years ago and brought back to our chapter. (David Simon - Exodus AZA - 1/16/99)

What's missing from this picture? - This isn't really a program, but a retention strategy that the whole chapter, or just the membership committe can participate in. It's important to let members know they are missed when they don't come to meetings. Here are some ways to let them know you noticed their absence:

  1. Take a picture (make enough copies for each paper member of your chapter). Have the chapter make picture frames,or a card to attach the picture to. Make sure to include a message that says "What's missing from this picutre? YOU! We missed you at the meeting and hope you'll come back soon!"

  2. Buy a blank puzzle at a craft store, or make your own out of cardboard. Have the chapter decorate it and include a message for the missing member saying "You're the missing peice of the puzzle.. Hope to see you at the next meeting". Break up the puzzle and put all the peices except one in the envelope and send it to the missing member. (Ami Kantor - Advisor to Empire BBYO - 1/16/99)

Life Ceremonies - Hold Life Ceremonies when all Seniors get to talk about their experiences in BBYO. Do this by candlelight.

Candle Making - Have all the Seniors make candles that they can use in their Life Ceremony, invite other Chapters to participate in this project.

Senior Slam Weekends or Overnights - Sponsor a weekend for Seniors in the beginning of the year. Invite all in the Senior Class. Hold another weekend at the end of the year. During this weekend, have Life Ceremonies.

Big Brother/Sister Program - Offer all new members a big brother/sister, a member of the AZA/BBG Chapter who is a Junior or Senior. Have the Big Brother/Sister help his Little Brother/Sister by calling him about meetings, offerring rides, etc. This will keep the older member involved as well as getting the young member active.

Junior/Senior Newsletter - Have a Regional Newsletter for only Juniors and Seniors. Have this paper be written and produced by an all Junior and Senior Staff.

College Programs - As a Chapter, visit colleges or hold a program about college preparation. Invite a college dean or professor to the meeting to talk about what is expected in college.

Senior Retention Cards - Have Senior Retention Cards that are given to all Seniors. Have these cards entitle the Senior bearer to choice seating at meetings and meals, first meals, first beds, Program Discounts, etc.

Phone Calls to Absent Members - During your meeting, take notice of the members who are not present. One person (usually the moreh/morah) should call these members to find out why they didn't come to the meeting. There could be a legit reason - school, family, work, etc ... but if the member is unhappy with some aspect of the chapter - a phone call like this will inform you right away.
