When lactating, females will allow any cub in their pride to nurse.

if they are out to kill and if they are not, will offten
ignore lions wandering close to them.

Lions can go without food for more than a week.

Lions lose their Manes when they get Injured
males tend to Avoid a long-maned rival, who
is likely to be an undefeated combatant.

Sometimes Female Lions can develop Manes. Such
masculine females likely occur when the Embryo is
disrupted,either at conception or while in the womb.

The darker the mane, the older the lion.

The lion was once found throughout Africa, Asia and Europe but now exists only in Africa, with one exception.
The last remaining Asiatic lions are found in Sasan-Gir national park in India, which was primarily created to protect the species.

The reputed king of the jungle is extinct in Djibouti, Egypt and Eritrea.

Nicknamed the “King of Beasts” or the “King of the Jungle”,
most lions can be found in Southern and Eastern Africa.

Male lions have a distinctive mane that attract the lionesses.

Lionesses are better hunters and do most of the hunting.


Leopard


The leopard is the most widespread of all big cats.

A leopard can carry dead weight about 2–3 times
its own weight up to 5.7 m (19 ft) into a tree.

Leopards are found through out Africa but not in the Sahara.

A Leopard likes to drink daily
But could go a month without water.

Leopards are both excellent swimmers and climbers.

No two leopards have the same markings or color.
In fact each leopard's spots are unique, similar to human fingerprints.

The name "leopard" comes from the Greek word leopardus,
which is a combination of leon (lion) and pardus (panther), according to PBS Nature.

Leopard can run at over 58 kilometres per hour (36 mph)

The leopard's spots are called rosettes because they look like roses.
A leopards spots may be round or square in shape depending on the region.

Leopards protect their food from other animals by dragging it high up into the trees.
A leopard will often leave their prey up in the tree for days and return only when they are hungry!

A male leopard can drag a carcass three times its own weight – including small giraffes – six metres up at tree.

Black leopards called black panthers, were once regarded as a
separate species, but they are now considered true leopards
Although they are black, their rosettes of spots are still
faintly visible, and sometimes they are even born into the same litter as common leopards.

They usually drag their food up a tree to avoid scavengers
and other predators, like lions and hyenas.


Cheetah


International Cheetah Day Is December 4th.

Cheetahs are the only cat that can`t retract it`s claws.

Cheetahs were once raced against greyhounds.

Cheetahs favorite prey are Thompson`s gazzelle.

Cheetahs top speed 70 mph in 2-3
Seconds can maintain speed for 1000 feet.

After any chase, A Cheetah must rest for About
30 minutes During this time the cheetah is almost defenseless.

With each stride a Cheetah can
cover 23 to 26 feet.

The cheetah was trained by man for hunting
as long ago as 3000 B.C.

Cheetahs have between 2,000 and 3,000 spots
which help them to camouflage themselves.

The black tear marks below their eyes help to
keep the sunlight from blinding them while they hunt.

Cheetahs can purr, but they can't roar.


Tiger


International Tiger Day Is July 29th.

An average tiger litter consists of three cubs.

There is eight subspecies of tigers reconized today.

Tigers have striped skin,not just striped fur.

There are three subspecies of Tigers that are extinc
the Bali tiger,Javan tiger and the Caspian tiger.

A tigress becomes sexually mature at three
to four years old.

The sumatran tiger has the most stripes of
all the tiger subspecies,and the siberian
tiger has the fewest stripes.

A tigers paw prints are called pug marks.

A tigers sense of smell is poor.

Tigers occupy a range from Soviet Union and
Iran,through India,China,southeast Asia,Malaysia
and Indonesia.

In a good leap,a tiger can cover more than 30 feet.

The Siberian Tiger needs to eat over
20 pounds of meat a day to sustainitself
in the cold climate.It is capable of eating
over 100 pounds of meat in one sitting.

A Tigers paw prints are called pug marks
A tigers forefeet have five toes and the hind feet
have four toes.All toes have claws.The Claws are
80 to 100 mm in length.

The length of a tigers canine teeth

length and weiged 423 kg 932 lb in October 1986.

One Siberian tiger traveled 620 miles in 22 days in search of food.

Tiger's forehead has a marking which resembles the Chinese
character 王, which means "king". Consequently, many cartoon depictions
of tigers in China and Korea are drawn with 王 on their forehead.

The white spot on the back of Tigers Ears is called an Ocelli.

Tigers are nicer then lions, tigers share their food
and males let females and cubs eat first, but Lions
will fight to the death over a kill.


Cougar - Mountain Lion - Puma - Catamount


The scientific name of the mountain lion, Puma concolor, means “lion of one color.”

The Puma can be found in 21 of 23 countries in the Americas.Because
of the vast range it occupies, it holds the Guinness world record
for the animal with the greatest number of names.
It has over 40 names in English alone.

The mountain lion is found over wider range
than any other mammal in the western hemisphere
except for man.

They pounce so violently that it can drag its
prey 20 feet along the ground.

A mountain lions tail is used for balancing.

Mountain lions are one of the most
widely distributed of mammals.

Cougars are champion jumpers among cats,
able to execute a 30 ft standing broad jump or
an 18 ft jump straight up the face of a cliff.

A cougar from a suitable vantage point can drop
65 ft to the ground with out injuring itself.

Cougar Cubs weigh "1lb" at birth,But
by one year of age they are 60-90 pounds.

A Cougar in the 100 meters
can run 45 mph in 4.7 seconds.

Mountain Lions Can Purr.


Jaguar


Jaguars rang from sothern Arizona and New Mexico
to lower Patagonia.

Like tigers, Jaguars sometimes spend the
heat of the day half-submerged in a stream.

The Jaguars produces the most powerful
bite of any of the big cats.

The word ‘jaguar’ comes from the Native American word
‘Yajuar’, which means ‘he who kills with one leap'.

Jaguars’ rosettes are bigger than thos of leopards, and have a spot in the center.


Snow Leopard


Snow Leopard Day Is October 23rd.

A snow leopard can leap up to 50 feet.

A Snow Leopards tail is
90% of it`s body length.

The Snow Leopard is slightly smaller than the leopard
it`s dense fur makes it look larger.

China holds 60% of the snow leopard population.

The fur on their belly is about 5 inches thick.

The female is about 30% smaller than the male.

Reports of snow leopards attacking or killing humans are unheard of
in fact, snow leopards are known to avoid human presence than any other big cat.

They are often called the 'Ghosts Of The Mountain'
Because they are rarely seen and spend most of their lives in solitude.

An average snow leopard lives between 15 to 18 years of age but some
snow leopards bred in captivity are said to have lived up to 21.

In captivity, the largest tiger on record
was a Siberian male named Jaipur, owned by American animal trainer
Joan Byron Marasek. In 1986, at the age of nine
years old, Jaipur measured 3.32 m (10 ft 11 in)
long from nose to tail tip and weighed 423 kg (932 lb).
