Clinton Grove Elementary Comer Day
Guiding our Children to Excellence

The School Planning and Management Team, PTA and staff of Clinton Grove Elementary School have planned a fun and informative day for parents and students. Join us with your family for Guilding Our Children To Excellence Day. Each participant will have the opportunity to intteract in workshops and activities that will focus on supporting our children.

We hope you can join us on this very special day - January 23rd from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. In addition to workshops for parents there will be a variety of activities for the children to make it a fun day for all. Lunch will be provided.

You MUST register to participate. Contact the school at (301) 599-2414 or email the Webmaster for registration information. The schedule for the day is:

Please complete the registration form sent home and return it to the schoool no later than Tuesday, January 19th. Select a first and second choice for each session. We will do our best to accommodate your first choice. Please be sure to select at least one sessions that is a child/parent session. A seperate registration form for each child attending will need to be submitted.

Adult Sessions
Building the Child Centered School with the Comer School Development Program (SDP) This session will provide parents/guardians with an introduction to the objectives of the School Development Program used at Clinton Grove, including its systems approach to management based on principles of child growth and development and interpersonal relationships. Session 1 or 2
Personality Types-Identifying Types and Dealing with Conflicts Are you a person who loves to be with people? Do you have a child (spouse) who needs a lot of time alone? Do you have to pay close attention to details while your child tends to "see the big picture"? Are you punctual while your child "dawdles"? This session will help you understand some conflicts that can be expected between those with different personalty types. The participants to plan to brainstorm ways to relate smoothly with those of other types. Session 2
The MSPAP Experience This session will allow parents to experience a MSPAP task in much the same way their children do. There will be a question and answer period at the end of the session. Session 1 or 2
Behavior Management in the Home Your school psychologist will lead a discussion on and provide materials related to managing children's behavior at home. The session is limited to 10 participants. Session 1
Lnaguage Development Do you have a child who doesn't follow directions, understand the question or give appropriate answers? Does you child have dofficulty learning sounds with words or processing sounds for spelling? All of the above can be attributed to a language deficit. This session will give you ways to assist your child in developing these skills. Session 1
Visualize and Verbalize Language Your child may have difficulty imaging, retaining and/or orally expressing his/her thoughts about what is stated, read or heard in a program or a reading assignment. Questions can be answered in complete thoughts for both oral and written expression. This session focuses on how you can help develop these skills. Session 2
Simple Writing Strategies that Work In this session you will learn strategies your child uses in school to assist in the writing process. You will also discover ways to encourage your child to do more writing and ways to improve writing skills. Session 2 or 3
Nurturing Children Through Their Development Learn tips for understanding and nurturing developmental needs at each age of elementary school children. Session 1 or 3
Simple Reading Strategies That Work In this session you will learn strategies that you can use with your child to help him/her to become a better reader. Session 2 or 3
High School Assessments Our 6th graders will be the first high school students required to pass the Maryland High School Assessments before graduating. This session will focus on why, when and how these tests will be administered. Session 3
Child and Adult Sessions
Do You Hear Me? This workshop highlights proven techniques that will foster open communication between children and parents. Participants will discover new techniques to diffuse anger, alternatives to punishment and how to indentify/accept others' feelings. A real treat for both parents and children. Warning: Plan to have fun! Session 1 or 2
Make It - Take It This workshop provides parents with activities and games to make and take home for use in reinforcement of skills their child may need at their level. Reading and mathematics activities will be provided. Session 3
Graphing Graphing is fun! In this workshop you will learn what the county requires in data analysis. There will be a human graph, a candy graph and much more. Session 2 or 3
Fun With Words & Pictures in the Computer Lab This session will take place in the Jostens Lab where the participants will have a chance to work with text and graphics to tell a story and write an illustrated letter, card or newsletter. Bring your imagination! Session 1, 2 or 3
At the Media Center Children will have the opportunity to interact with crafts, computers and stories. Session 1 or 2
Cooperative Games and Activities Activities and games of cooperation without the pressure of winning or losing. Individual, partner, small group and large group activities will be offered. Come visit to learn and have fun. Session 1 or 2
How to Make Spring Rolls Learn to make spring rolls easily. Anyone can make them. Participants will leanr how to prepare them with their very own favorite ingredients. It's a special addition to your favorite finger foods. Session 2 or 3
Fun With Math Parents will be able to use easy to create games to help their child reinforce their math skills and challenge their thinking. Session 1
