Linebacker Minor joins practice squad (9.16.99)

The Panthers signed linebacker Kory Minor to their practice squad today. To make room for Minor Carolina released defensive tackle Harry Deligianis. Minor was a seventh-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers this year, but was waived on September 5. Minor played college football at the Notre Dame. He was a four year starter and recorded 22.5 career sacks.


Gilbert hurt in loss (9.13.99)

Defensive tackle Sean Gilbert injured rib cartilage on a pass rush in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Saints. Gilbert continued playing despite the pain.

"I just felt it collapse inside, like I got shot or something," Gilbert said. "I felt like something was loose and hanging."

X-rays were taken at halftime and played the second half wearing a brace around his ribs. He said the injury affected his performance. He finished with two assists.

Gilbert said he was unsure about his status for this week's game at home against Jacksonville, but coach George Seifert said he was unaware of any injuries that occurred against the Saints that would prevent playing against Jacksonville.

The Panthers lost rookie linebacker Hannibal Navies earlier this week to a knee injury. Navies underwent surgery to repair the damage and will be out for six weeks.


Metcalf signs, Oliver cut loose; Practice squad set (9.7.99)

The Panthers signed running back/wide receiver/kick returner Eric Metcalf today. Metcalf was waived by the Ravens earlier this week. Metcalf ranks seventh all-time with 16,280 career total yards and has returned an NFL record 11 kicks for touchdowns. Metcalf also has played in three Pro Bowls. To make room for Metcalf, running back Winslow Oliver was released.

Carolina set their practice squad for the season. They assigned offensive tackle Dan Best, wide receiver Dialleo Burks, defensive tackle Harry Deligianis, quarterback Matt Lytle, and running back Sirr Parker to the practice squad. Burks can be activated during the season in case of injuries at the receiver position.

George Seifert announced the backup quarterback for the season. Steve Bono was named the number two quarterback behind Steve Beuerlein. The announcement pushed Jeff Lewis back to the third spot. Dameyune Craig is fourth on the depth chart.


Panthers make final cuts (9.6.99)

The Carolina Panthers and the rest of the teams in the NFL trimmed their rosters down to the regular season league maxium 53-player rosters yesterday. Carolina cut offensive linemen Dan Best, Rob Bohlinger, and Paul Janus. Receivers Iheanyi Uwaezuoke, and Dialleo Burks, defensive tackle Harry Deligianis, fullback Mike Dulaney, quarterback Matt Lytle, and linebackers Spencer Reid, and Kinnon Tatum were also cut. Tight end Luther Broughton was traded to Philadelphia for a conditional draft pick.

Coach George Seifert also named Steve Beuerlein the starting quarterback, but would not name a backup.


Carolina cuts receiver; places three players on IR (8.31.99)

The Carolina Panthers cut wide receiver Daryle Hydleburg yesterday to narrow their roster down to the league maximum 72 players including NFL Europe players. Today they continued their cut down by placing defensive back Tony Booth, defensive lineman Robert Daniel, and wide receiver Jim Turner on the injured/reserve list.


Panthers waive nine (8.29.99)

The Carolina Panthers waived nine players today. They were linbeackers Horace Cook, and Sam Manuel, defensive linemen Chartric Darby, and Jerome Davis, and Andre Slappey, offensive linemen Jeffery Flowe and Michael Lies. Also waived were wide receiver Terry Guess, amd running back Reggie Shufford.
