My favorite music comes from a project called Circle of Dust. The project's creator, Klay Scott, blends guitars and synths into a landscape of disturbing yet enjoyable music. He put together Circle's latest disk almost entirely by himself. He played all of the instruments (guitars, bass, drums, sythns), and he sang almost all of the vocals. He did all of the programming and samples, and of course he wrote all the songs. Klay produced his own disk and then drew up the artwork for its release. Klay Scott is a one man music generator, creating music out of any instrument he can lay his hands on. Probably one of the most accomplished "industrial" (god I hate that word) disks to come out of the underground is "Disengage". The sounds created by Klay are intelligent and fluid. They speak of internal pain and resolution using heavy guitars, tekno beats and harsh vocals. The disk also flows into a land of confusion (or understanding?) using acoustical guitars, eerie ambient sounds, and distant quotes and rants. The entire disk is held together with strong, thought provoking lyrics that accurately reflect our fall through the chasm. "Disengage" holds up to the term masterpiece.
This might be my most beloved song of my entire collection of music. I even used the analogy of a "deadly chasm" as the basis for my web site (In case you haven't figured that one out yet).
When you expect the pain, nothing more to ascertain. When you respect the lie, deadly chasm opened wide." This section, to me, is a warning of the dangers of placing faith in something I can't verify as the truth. When I do that, I leave myself vulnerable to those who can take advantage of my ignorance and shape my way of thinking to parallel their own. Pain and suffering fill the gaps of my misguided faith as I realize my mistake. Lies and truth have the same meaning. Nothing is all there is to hope for. The pain is constant as the ground opens up beneath my cracked and bleeding feet, forming a deadly chasm that swallows me whole, leaving nothing but a hidden void I shall carry with me until my fall through the chasm comes to an end.
"Lost among the recesses of the undefined. Ethereal psychotic haze. Seemingly endless is the fall. No stable memories to recall. You came and took the rest of them all..." Trust has been used as a knife to carve out what little soul I had. I find myself wandering, knowing that I can never trust anything ever again. The chasm sits at the end of every foolish road of faith.
Klay's music from "Disengage" was featured on several shows on MTV (MTV!!?? NO! WHY!!?? THE HORROR!!! THE HORROR!!.....I guess the man has to eat.) The songs "Yurasuka", "Babylon" and "Prelandra" were presented for all the narrow minded listeners to hear.
Klay has used many different names in the past such as Tox (Brainchild), Celldweller, Deathwish, and Dred (All three used in Argyle Park), Visual Timekeeper (Styper Tribute). He changed his name from Scott Albert (his original name) to Klay Scott (his final name) on his disk Disengage because: "The person I was, for a lack of a better description, is dead."
Klay didn't always work alone. The self-titled release in 1995 also featured Daren "kLaNk" Diolosa (guitar, extraneous vocal eruptions) and Jason Tilton (drums, percussion). The Brainchild disk had a member named Phychoboy (vocals, guitars). Others to work with Klay on Cirlce of Dust include Chris Donahue and John og Lopez as bassists, and evol eye jeni ("Bed of Nails")
Klay disbanded Circle of Dust a few years ago when R.E.X. (Circle's old lable) was going bankrupt and would not allow Klay to release any work. This went on for about two years and some of the songs in Disengage were written during this period. Klay states that he always needs to create, no matter what and therefore released one more disk as Circle of Dust before finally putting an end to Circle.
Everything Klay has learned about instruments, programming, sampling, was pretty much self-taught. He just picked up an instrument and started playing and learning or he read a manual and learned programming and sampling through trail and error.
Circle of Dust - Bainchild was originally released as a disk called Brainchild - Mindwarp and was not intended to be part of the Circle of Dust series. However, Klay was later persuaded to re-release the disk with the Circle of Dust title. The songs 'Prayers of a Dead Man' 'Telltale Crime' and 'Deviate' were re-mixed and are slightly different from the original songs on Mindwarp. Klay does not consider this disk to be part of the Circle of Dust series
The disk Disengage is Klay's last as Cirlce of Dust. The disk contains material written between 1991 to 1997, and most of it written during the legal battles with R.E.X. in which Klay could not release anything.
The last six songs (remixes) on Disengage were originally meant for a separate disk called 'RefractorChasm'. The disk was shot down so Klay added the songs to the end of Disengage.
