“Just in Time” – Introduction to Technology
Syllabus
There are four obligatory sessions (indicated with a
*) which total 13 contact hours. Participants are required to select
eight (8) additional four-hour sessions as determined by the pre-assessment
of competencies. Participants may choose to attend any additional
offerings.
* Session 1 - Introduction - 3 hrs.

Create Individual Educational Technology Plan – IETP – (approved
by instructor)

Session 2 – Basic Skills in Computer Operation-Part
I - 4 hrs.

Basic operating system vocabulary

Executing DOS and Windows commands

Explore components of a basic computer system

Identify peripheral devices

Format diskettes; copy files; more files
Session 3 - Basic Skills in Computer Operation-PartII
- 4 hrs.

Explore operating systems such as Windows 95 and Windows
98

Install software

Configure control panel and other settings

Set up network configuration

Utilize file management system – Windows Explorer
Session 4 – Networking/Troubleshooting - 4 hrs.

Identify basic components of Local Area Network

Identify network topography
-
Identify problems and develop step-by-step procedures for
addressing problems

Connecting printers and other devices

Simple maintenance procedures

“What to tell the technician”
*Session 5 - Integration of Technology into Classroom
Instruction - 3 hrs.

Review IGOs for individual curricular area(s)

Identify technology applications appropriate for addressing
specific goals

Develop methods and procedures for integration

Develop assessment tools to determine learning and effectiveness
Session 6 – Research Technologies and Telecommunications

Explore the Internet as it relates to the classroom

Identify various search engines and filtering software

Use bookmarks and other browser tools to enhance classroom
use of the Internet

Identify uses of email as a part of instruction

Design effective keyword searches
Session 7 – Word Processing-Part I - 4 hrs.
Session 8 – Word Processing-Part II - 4 hrs.

Create a document using a word processing application while
employing the following skills:

Cut, copy and paste within a document

Moving text, inserting objects

Utilizing bold, italic, underline, centering

Session 9 – Critical Review of Software-Part

Preview software applications for appropriate curricular
levels and subject areas

Session 10 – Integrated Learning Systems/Elementary
Basic Skills – 4 hrs.

Note: This session
is appropriate for those individuals who are working with students in grades
K-6 where the Basic Skills program in being implemented. This would
apply to new teachers or experienced teachers needing training in this
area.
Session 11 - Creating Multimedia Presentation (Powerpoint-Part
I) – 4 hrs.
Session 12 - Creating Multimedia Presentation
(Powerpoint –Part II) – 4 hrs.
Session 13 - Creating Multimedia Presentation
(Powerpoint –Part III) – 4 hrs.

Session 14 - Using a Spreadsheet in an Educational

and formatting pages

Create a grade book or other record keeping tool

Create reports, charts and graphs from data

Export data into other applications

utilizing both text and graphics

Identify page layout, fonts, placement of text and graphics
and print options

Use desktop publishing tools to create a homepage

Create a multimedia presentation using sound, text, graphics,

Utilize such tools as a digital camera, video/audio capture,
