Blair Witch Project

Type: Horror

Rating: ****1/2 (out of five stars)

Before I saw "The Blair Witch Project", I head heard reviews saying that it is incredibly frightening and may go down as one of the best and most innovative horror movies of all time. Knowing what the plot was basically about, I thought to myself that the movie could in no way be as scary as everyone was saying. I was wrong.

According to the story, three student filmmakers: Heather, Mike, and Josh, went into the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, to shoot a documentary about the local legend of the Blair Witch. They were never seen again. One year later, their footage was found. The movie is a shortened version of the film the students recorded during their days and nights in the forest.

I don't want to give away too much, but the movie begins with the three students interviewing several citizens of Burkittsville about the Blair Witch. They then venture into the woods to document some sites associated with the Blair Witch. On their way back out of the woods, however, very bizarre things begin to happen. Over time, the three students go from slightly worried to frightened and extremely desperate due to their experiences.

If "The Blair Witch Project" was shot like a normal movie, it probably wouldn't be so scary. However, it's almost completely improvised and filmed pretty much through the eyes of the three students. You start to feel attached to the characters as they play out their parts with an almost realistic fear. Also, unlike most horror movies, this relies more on suspense (a lot generated by your own imagination) and psychological drama than blood, gore, and special effects. This is one of the best horror movies I've ever seen, and although it has its minor flaws, (such as a somewhat slow start little bit of repetition) most people dont seem to care.
