Big Daddy

Type: Comedy

Rating: *** (out of five stars)

In this movie, Sonny Koufax (Adam Sandler) is a law school graduate who never took his bar exam. He lives off $200,000 that he received from a minor automobile injury and his one-day-a-week job working as a tollbooth operator. Anyway, one day a 5-year old boy named Julian is left at the door of his apartment with a note saying he is the son of Sonny's roommate, Kevin (Jon Stewart). Kevin, however, is on a job in China. When Sonny finds out that Julian's mother has died, he tells Social Services that he is Kevin and that he will hold on to Julian until they can find a new home for him. Sonny does this to impress his girlfriend, Veronica, who is thinking of leaving him. His plan doesn't really work though, and Sonny is stuck with Julian for awhile. Sonny basically teaches Julian to be a slob like him. The situation between Sonny and Julian gets worse, however, when Julian's teacher tells Sonny about Julian's poor behavior in school and when Social Services finds out who Sonny really is.

This movie was very funny and has a somewhat better plot than Sandler's other movies, especially "The Waterboy". There are some cheesy parts, but as a whole, it's a fairly decent comedy movie with a so-so effort at giving the movie some emotional appeal. If you are turned of by the extreme vulgarity of current comedies such as "South Park" and "American Pie", then "Big Daddy" should appeal to you (although it isn't exactly a very clean movie itself, either).
